During the last months, Netflix has launched a strategy that contemplates ending, once and for all, shared accounts. However, certain countries still held back from the changes in their policy. Today, unfortunately for many subscribers, the platform announced that Mexico, Argentina and Colombia join the list of regions that will have to say goodbye to account sharing.
Netflix’s idea is as follows: a netflix account Yes, it can be shared by two or more people, but they must live in the same home.. So, forget about sharing your profile with friends or family who are somewhere else.
“Netflix accounts are designed to be used in the same household”, mentions the company.
If you read us from one of these countries, perhaps you are asking yourself: what happens if a member of the household has to go on a trip and wants to use the account abroad? Don’t worry, you can do it by requesting special access. However, the permit will be valid for a limited period of time (7 days).
Surely at this time there are many people using someone else’s account. In case you want to continue enjoying Netflix, you have two options. The simplest is that simply you subscribe individually. Therefore, you will have your own account.
The next alternative is that the account owner pays an additional fee for having a member residing outside of the household. In Mexico it is necessary to disburse $69 per month (additional to the membership) for each extra quota, indicate on your website. It is also important to note that this proposal is only available in the Standard and Premium plans.
“Account holders can purchase an extra member slot and invite people outside of their household to use Netflix. The extra member will have their own profile and their own account and password, but the membership will be paid for by the person who invited him to join.”
Netflix.
If you have decided on the second option (that the owner pays an extra amount), you should know that Netflix will also create an individual profile for you. In fact, you will be able to log in with your own email and password, although you will never be able to use that profile on more than one device at a time. On the other hand, you can transfer the history of contents already seen and those saved in “My list”.
Be careful, these changes will be in force as of today. Netflix points out that all those who share an account will receive an email to be notified about the update in the regulations.
Is there a way to escape the hunt for Netflix? No. The reality is that the service is devoting great efforts to eradicate the practice of account sharing. Therefore, it does not seem that they have the intention of giving in despite the criticism And maybe not, even if they lose millions of subscribers.
At the end of April, we learned that Netflix lost more than a million members during the last quarter, when they banned account sharing. Will Mexico and the rest of Latin America react in the same way? Most likely, yes…
