To choose the best strawberries in the supermarket, all you have to do is use a little bit of basic logic applicable to any other fresh vegetable. But we are not going to fool ourselves, good or bad luck also influences, and how careless people or the supermarket itself are with their gender. The berries and forest fruits They are very delicate and it is very annoying to get home and find half a poor package.
There is a very simple trick that I have been applying when buying strawberries -or strawberries-, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries or currants, which are usually packaged, much to our regret, in plastic. It is appreciated that every time packaging is further reduced and that companies use already recycled and recyclable materials, although this increases the chances of taking spoiled fruit.
Obviously, the first thing is to check the date packaging and preferential consumption, as well as taking a look at look at visible fruits in the outermost layer of the packet. The problem is that one rotten piece spoils all the others, and often we can’t locate the specimens that may be mouldy, rotten or stale.
The trick that we can all apply before buying
What is the solution? Mentally pray to the gods so as not to surprise us? That won’t hurt, but what we recommend is simply turn the package around. Carefully, yes, to observe the box or bag from below and on the sides.
What we are looking for are humidity, stains, juices or even puddles of water or fruit juice. Before any of these agents, it is better to change the box. And if everything seems correct, it’s time to flip the container completely.
The fruits should separate from the background and the walls of the tub or box if they are fresh, intact and healthy. When they stick or remain attached a bit, without freedom of movement, we should suspect their good health. We insist, with smoothness.
This does not mean that they are bad or that it is a bad practice of the producer or trader; they are so delicate that sometimes they simply break down too soon or receive some unwanted bloweven by the customers themselves. But we want to avoid them, if we want to take the best berries from the store.
In summary: after a superficial visual analysis, turn the strawberry box gently and check that there is no moisture and that no sticking pieces to the container. Whether they will have more or less flavor we can no longer be sure, but at least they won’t be soft or poor.
