Holy Week tastes like torrija, this is a certainty as great as that on these dates the towns of coast and mountain They are filled with the arrival of vacation tourism around this very religious, but at the same time, very pagan celebration.
On a gastronomic level, the celebration of this festival is not conceivable without a dessert made from fried bread coated with an egg sprinkled with sugar, and previously soaked in milk, flavored with cinnamon and orange according to the traditional recipe.
Furthermore, this recipe is typically made in Spanish homes instead of purchased in supermarkets and bakeries since it is a recipe from utilization kitchenbut it also represents a moment of family cooking that many do not give up.
Despite everything, torrijas can also be found on the shelves of the large chains present in the national geographyl, so the Organization of Consumers and Users has its own classification for this delicious and greasy dessert.
Specifically, the OCU has looked at this product to determine what the best torrijas of supermarkets present, mostly the frozen section.
Specifically, it has delved into the quality of the torrijas sold in Ahorramás, Alcampo, Carrefour, Casa Eceizal, El Corte Inglés and Mercadona. The parameters analyzed have been nutritional information, the presence of additives, labeling, the quality of the fats and the amount of sugars used in the composition. All of this has been accompanied by the opinion of expert pastry chefs.
From Mercadona to Carrefour
According to this analysis, the best torrijas are found in the Valencian chain, Mercadona wins, especially in tasting by presenting a “good balance” between flavors and aromas, as well as adequate juiciness. Now, at a nutritional level, it is a torrija that adds additives, as well as fats and sugars, since it is an ultra-processed product.
The organization has also praised the torrijas of Eceizal House, due to its juicy condition and a touch of caramel that is pleasant to the taste. Its drawbacks are the price, as well as its unorthodox shape, as it bears no resemblance to the classic torrija.
The organization also highlights the proposal of Carrefour: It is the cheapest version, with less fat and sugar, and also retains the juiciness expected from this type of recipe. Finally, the entity praises the torrija from the El Corte Inglés supermarket for not including artificial additives.
The entity highlights, however, that probably none of them are on par with homemade artisanal torrijas, nor are they, consequently, prices.
A homemade torrija, taking into account the prices of milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, citrus, oil, electricity consumed and using a loaf of bread that they sell especially for torrijas, can cost around 0.5 euros (a price that should be updated according to inflation each month).
On the other hand, the already prepared torrijas, sold in supermarkets, range between 1.4 and 2.8 euros for torrija. For this reason, it is as important to keep prices in mind as the final qualities: perhaps it is worth spending a few minutes on this very traditional dessert for the coming weeks.
