In May we must continue the work started in April, to leave most of the summer vegetables planted. Although the saying goes that “until May 40, don’t take off your coat”, the truth is that the risks of frost are minimal And, if we want our garden to produce to the maximum in summer, we have to get everything back on track.
It will also be time to gather spinach, lettuce, artichokes, turnips, radishes, Swiss chard, strawberries, parsley, broad beans and peas. And, as always until you collect them, hill garlic and onions.
What to sow and transplant in May
if you have done seedlings, April and May are the key months for transplanting to the garden. If you are going to buy a seedling, remember to plan beforehand what you are going to grow, taking into account the planting framework.
Most summer vegetables can (and should) be transplant to the garden from mid-April and throughout May, when we can start planting even the most typical vegetables of late summer and early autumn, such as melons, watermelons and pumpkins:

What seedbeds to prepare in May
In May we can continue preparing seedbeds for some plants that we can plant until June, especially if we want to climb some of the vegetables from the garden: that is, transplanting the vegetables in different weeks so that they do not all come out at the same time.
- Chard
- Lettuce
- Cauliflower
- Tomato
- Pepper
- Eggplant
- Celery
- Cabbage
Other garden tasks to do in May
In addition to all the work involved in organizing the summer garden, mayi is the month in which spring fully enters and with it the weeds and the insects.
During this month it is important to start controlling the pests, as well as starting to weed all the plants that do not interest us in the garden, a task that ideally we should do at least a couple of times a week.

By this time we should have well-grown broad beans and peas, which we cannot forget to tutor so that they continue to grow properly.
With the arrival of the heat we must also water more often. If we do not have drip irrigation and we plan to install it, it is better to do it when before, well, going back to the proverb “For San Isidro Labrador the cold goes away and the heat comes”.
