Volkswagen has announced that its battery factory for electric cars will finally be in Sagunt (Valencia). Although the news is already officialthere are still some pending administrative fringes for the entry into operation of what will be one of the largest battery factories in Spain.
The confirmation has come from the mayor of Sagunt himself, who has issued a statement through Facebook indicating that the German manufacturer has finally decided on the Valencian town, although he has not given more details in this regard. According to the mayor, the process has been a work between the three administrations, whose final result is the implementation of the Volkswagen factory:
“The German company has just announced that our city has been chosen to host the new battery factory for sustainable vehicles. There have been months of discreet negotiations but the joint work of the City Council, Generalitat and the Central Government has borne fruit. We have established ourselves as the best option to host this gigafactory”.

In this sense, the integration of the factory will be done within the second phase of the Parc Sagunt, and with it the creation of about 3,500 direct skilled jobs for the production of batteries. Jobs, in addition, to which will be added all the indirect ones and those of the suppliers and associates for the start-up of the factory.
2 billion investment for the Volkswagen battery factory
Subsequently, the news has been confirmed by the German manufacturer itself. Although the start of the PERTE process (Strategic projects for economic recovery and transformation), will be one of the great investments within the European Recovery Funds.
In total, an initial investment of about €2 billion. Once the Volkswagen electric car battery factory is up and running, it can generate 40 GWh per year.
Volkswagen’s plans happen because the new electric battery factory in Sagunto comes into operation and start production around 2026. If nothing changes, this will be the second major battery factory that the Volkswagen conglomerate will have in Europe. In this way, Sagunto will join the other planned for its construction in wolfsburgarea where the group’s headquarters are.
In addition, the battery factories will form an additional subsidiary of the group, responsible only for the design, development and manufacture of this technology, which, as electrification progresses, will be key to the future of Volkswagen.
