Aztec TV changed the name from Atlético de Morelia to Monarcas Morelia in the 1990s and in 2021 Monarcas ceased to exist to become the new professional club Mazatlan Soccer, Based in Mazatlan Sinaloa.
On March 21, the businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego assured via Twitter that the Mazatlán Soccer team would stay in said entity and even said that he was injecting capital to create a great sports city.
TV Azteca decided to sell the Atlético de Morelia brand to José Luis Higuera, a former director of Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara and current owner of Club Atlético Morelia, a week after three of his creditors to file for Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code US.
The request for entry to commercial bankruptcy was also extended to 35 of TV Azteca’s subsidiaries, among which is the Mazatlan Soccer Team.
In the last quarter of the year, TV Azteca reported a drop in its profits derived from the drop in advertising sales and the high costs related to the transmission of the Qatar 2022 World Cup matches.
“The growth in costs for the period is derived from the payment of rights to broadcast and produce content related to the World Cup, as well as the generation of competitive programming,” explained Rafael Rodríguez, general director of the television station.
Although, thanks to the broadcast of the World Cup, its sales increased 31% in the period, up to 5,203 million pesos, the high costs of transmission and production of content, added to the drop in advertising sales, affected its profits.
