The controversy is served by the fact that in Predator: The Prey the main character is a woman. Much more, one that is capable of facing the predator on her land. Discussion on the matter has come to question the credibility of the argument, based on that point. Could someone with the physical size and skill of Naru (Amber Midthunder) defeat a creature trained to kill and armed with state-of-the-art weapons?
The script makes it clear that Naru is capable enough to deal with the Predator. And that she can do it through his cunning and knowledge of the terrain. In fact, the character of Midthunder has a natural talent for hunting. Or so several members of the Comanche tribe to which he belongs insist.
the plot of Predator: the Prey it is based on the ability of the young huntress to succeed in adverse circumstances. A point she reiterates on several occasions. From remembering that Naru can “see” things that go unnoticed by others, to her fearless will. The premise makes it clear that it will not be physical strength that will allow the character to succeed.
Of course, this is not a formula that the franchise has not used before. In the first movie, predator, the character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger ends up discarding all his weapons and using cunning to face his enemy. This was after the alien had killed an entire trained military commando one by one and that he could rival the Predator in skill. But in the end Dutch, played by the actor, understands that only You will be able to defeat the creature with intelligence, strategy and good instinct.
The same goes for the cop played by Danny Glover in predator 2, who must wield his regulation weapon against the much more sophisticated ones of a Yautja. But, in the end, he understands that it is not about a hand-to-hand fight, but about discovering the strengths and weaknesses of his enemy. So much so that, when he finally kills the hunter, the character is rewarded by the rest of the Predators that accompany the first.
But with the female characters, the caveat is even more obvious. A good example is Sanaa Lathan’s Alexa Woods, in Alien vs. predator. The character manages to win the respect of a hunter and becomes his second in command, while both try to escape from hundreds of Aliens. He accomplishes this by demonstrating his audacity and courage, a plot twist similar to several used in the comics he is based on. In all situations, the women of the franchise have the ability to understand the alien as an enemy to defeat, beyond an unstoppable creature.
This is a list of some of the female characters who have faced the Predator in one way or another and lived to tell the tale.
Anna Gonsalves, in predator
The character played by actress Elpidia Carrillo is the only survivor along with Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) in predator (1987). As the entire squad she took hostage perished at the hands of the Yautja, Anna realized that she was not just a violent enemy, but one with strategy.
A member of a guerrilla group, the character was able to identify and understand the creature’s behavior at a precise level. In particular, after discovering that the Predator could bleed, which meant that it was a creature prone to being hurt. It is Anna who, together with Dutch, helps build a trap. And she is the first character to talk about the creature as part of a mythology that predates the movie’s plot.
And although he did not confront the hunter head-on, Anna dealt with his attack and survived. As much as to have a small cameo in the sequel as the visible face of an inexplicable situation that is sustained by the mystery.
Leona Cantrell, in predator 2
Actress María Conchita Alonso played a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. And while it couldn’t be said that she directly confronted the Predator, she did have a head-on encounter that she survived. Cantrell did not back down, but instead fired and grappled with the fleeing predator until it caught her. In the end, her agent saved her life when her adversary noticed that she was pregnant, causing her to rule her out as an opponent.
In the plot novel, written by John Thomas and Paul Monette and published in 1987, Cantrell’s strategic ability is more evident. And in fact, it’s clear that the character is trying to hunt down the Predator by trying to delve into his behavior. As much as to discover, by deduction and in a scene very similar to the one in the cinema, the location and place of his attack.
Isabella, from predators
The character is one of the survivors in the film’s plot. Some of the group of strangers brought to the Yautja hunting ground have advanced strategic and military skills. Before being kidnapped and taken to the unknown planet, she was working as a sniper for the Israel Defense Forces.
But as if that weren’t enough, the character knows the methods and the way the hunters perform in the fight. It is Isabelle who narrates a small and important reference to the original film and how the only two survivors saved their lives. In other words, giving up the frontal attack and paying special attention to the form of aggressive behavior of the alien.
Alexa Woods, in Alien vs. predator
The environmentalist and climbing expert, is another of the characters who survived the siege of the Predator. Much worse, she was attacked by hundreds of alien creatures during a Weyland Industries expedition to Bouvetøya, Antarctica. But one of the points of greatest interest in the character is the fact that she managed to earn the respect of a Yautja. Her feat was the consequence of having faced an Alien, defeating it and also saving the hunter’s life.
Together they set out on a journey through the pyramid, while fleeing from the ever-increasing colony of Aliens in the structure. In the end, Alexa receives a scar from the predator as a symbol of respect for their help, valor and courage.
Machiko Noguchi of Aliens vs. Predator:War (comic)
