Good news for users of the PS5. sony He has launched the most recent beta of the software of its current generation console, which comes with important news. The most notorious, without a doubt, is the addition of the long-awaited support for Dolby Atmos in games. A debt that had been claimed from the Japanese for a long time.
From now on, the PS5 is capable of rendering 3D Audio channels—powered by the Tempest 3D AudioTech engine—to Dolby Atmos-compatible devices connected to the console via HDMI. We are talking, of course, about televisions, home theater or sound bars.
Those who install the beta and want to test the support for Dolby Atmos in games, must enter the settings of the PS5 and then access Sound > Audio settings > Auto Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos. Undoubtedly a great addition by Sony, which thus begins to respond to a long-standing claim from players.
Keep in mind that the addition of Dolby Atmos on the PS5 has been a point of heated discussion among the public in the past. It is that, in reality, the console offers support for said surround sound technology since its launch at the end of 2020. However, its use was limited to video playback —such as movies and series— through the Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc player.
The games, for their part, were not compatible with Dolby Atmos and were limited to 3D Audio, a proprietary solution from Sony. It is evident that the Japanese are now trying to remedy the half-assed implementation of Dolby Laboratories’ technology, giving the public the option of choosing the alternative that best suits their taste or configuration.
To close the circle, Sony indicates that multimedia consumption apps – those for streaming music, movies or series, for example – can also be updated to support Dolby Atmos on the PS5.
The bad news is that you have to wait a bit longer for this to materialize, as these updates are not allowed during the beta phase. So the feature just Coming to platforms like Netflix when the expansion of the Dolby Atmos implementation arrives at the final software of the console.
The other unpleasant news is that, in principle, support for Dolby Atmos in PS5 games will be limited to some users. This is because the new console software beta is rolling out in “selected countries.” Specifically, United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany and France. The rest of the world will surely receive this long-awaited feature in the coming months, when it is added to the final version of the console software.
Improvements in SSD storage expansion and more news

Henceforth, the console will allow the installation of M.2 SSDs up to 8 TBagainst the current limit of 4 TB.
Other improvements that come with the new beta of the PS5:
- More accessibility features – use two controllers as if they were one, for example.
- Haptic feedback when navigating the console’s graphical interface.
- Reactions to messages with emojis.
- UI optimizations and new social features.
