Disney pioneered this field with its iconic Disneyland theme park and, more recently, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. These places allow fans to immerse themselves in the universes of their favorite movies and shows.

Nickelodeon, owned by Paramount Global, has followed a similar strategy by partnering with hotel and resort chains to bring its characters to luxury facilities, giving guests the opportunity to interact with SpongeBob SquarePants, the Ninja Turtles and other popular characters.
Now Netflix also plans to follow this trend by opening mini theme parks where visitors can buy products related to its content, enjoy food and immerse themselves in immersive experiences based on its original titles.
Claudia Benassini, specialist in restricted television and digital platforms and researcher at La Salle University, affirms that this strategy is necessary in an industry that is constantly evolving. Instead of relying solely on content diversification, streaming platforms are bringing their fictional worlds to the reality of audiences.
“I think it is a necessary step that can even give a new twist to the competition in this industry where content diversification no longer seems sufficient,” says Benassini.
However, these strategies can have challenges, as theme parks and luxury hotel experiences are often expensive and accessible only to a narrow segment of the audience. Disney, for example, faced financial difficulties with Euro Disney in Paris due to the high costs associated with the city. Similarly, the Star Wars park has also experienced attendance issues due to high costs. Admission ranges from $109 to $150, not counting additional costs on flights, accommodation, food and souvenirs.
Despite the financial challenges associated with the creation of theme parks, Benassini suggests that there are equally effective alternatives, such as pop-up (or traveling) stores and the sets of some series, whose experiences do not imply greater investment challenges.
HBO Max has recognized the growing competition in the streaming industry, driving the need to explore innovative business models. These include audience-facing experiences that have the potential to generate revenue that can be reinvested in future audiovisual projects.
