After the apotheosically strange way and very capable of blowing our heads with which the chapter “The Tomb” (1×04) of moon knight, the Serie by Jeremy Slater (2022) for the Marvel Cinematic Universe released on Disney+, curiosity about how this crazy superheroic adventure could continue made us look forward to seeing the next installment; titled “Asylums” (1×05) very reasonably.
But what we did not expect is that the director Mohamed Diab, previously involved in the feature film and who had already been in charge of the episodes “The Goldfish Problem” (1×01) and “The Friendly Type” (1×03), would start this one, not only in half res, but even with a light montage of incomprehensible input images and comments about what has happened that stir our interest in the plot again. Because they need an explanation.
But what’s more, here insist repeatedly with the prank of the last section of the previous chapter, with which we doubt about the perception of reality in moon knight and that we believed resolved thanks to the crazy and hilarious details that are seen at the end of it. We go back to the uncertainty about what the hell is really going on, with manners similar to those in the movie Twelve Monkeysby Terry Gilliam (1995).
A surreal and emotional journey in ‘Moon Knight’
surreal fantasy unleashed in all its splendor. And the journey through the past that is offered to us is quite attractive, with sudden transitions to different settings, good drama and some gloomy proposal, and serves to finally obtain the story of the protagonist of moon knight, Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector; that of the terrible events that led him to be the way he is. Y one contemplates it without blinking out of sheer anticipation.
But the question that, perhaps, we had not asked ourselves for not having gone beyond what Jeremy Slater and his writers had astutely shown us, and which is of the utmost importance to the character, they formulate it through the mouth of the doctor Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow; with great clarity. And the very moment it arises constitutes a surprise for us poor unsuspecting spectators at the mercy of the narrative tricks.
And it is that they do not have bad handwriting Rebecca Kirsch and Matthew Orton, the two authors of the script for “Asylum”, who had previously written for other series such as Twelve Monkeys (2015-2018) or Exorcist (2016-2018), the one, and the movie end operation (Chris Weitz, 2018) only, the other. His plot development and lines of dialogue for moon knight they are efficient, They do their job flawlessly. although they never dazzle us.
The wonderful interpretive work of Oscar Isaac
But this trip through the past to which we refer supposes, above all, a very emotional one for Steven Grant and Marc Spector who it affects us, possibly to a greater extent than anything else we’ve seen during the rest of the movies and series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. And Oscar Isaac gives us an authentic interpretive recital that we should value and thank as it deserves. It would be good if he received some important award.
Your work in “Asylum”along with the appropriate visual composition by Mohamed Diab and the score by Hesham Nazih, they manage to move us to the point of chills; with a tragic twist that, to top it off, definitely dignifies the whole. And, of course, they also take advantage of this episode to show us the circumstances in which the protagonist became the Moon Knight. Thus, we must admit that this is the most interesting to date.
