And after a long wait and many questions, the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is here. It is not only one of the most anticipated Marvel movies of the year, it is one of the films of The house of the ideas that have aroused the most expectation. It is the fourth film in the Thor saga and perhaps the one that shows the entire human dimension of the Asgardian god. And if that wasn’t enough, it has also been speculated that it could be the character’s farewell.
It’s a curious event for Marvel. Phase four brought a wide variety of new faces to the studio’s cinematic universe. And fired a good part of the original avengers. In addition to the Hulk/Bruce Banner, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, only Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is still active. And the new addition to his particular saga seems to remember him. The character, who has grown in interest and completed a peculiar arc of redemption in Endgame, returns with new purposes. The main? Find his place in the universe.
The premise, which Taika Waititi apparently intends to analyze from various points of view, makes Thor: Love and Thunder in a rarity. Also, in a new journey through the universe of a hero who has been forged in a uniquely emotional way. With his parents and brother dead, planet destroyed, and even without a real purpose, Thor returns to his origins. And the trailer recalls that journey with a series of details that make it clear how curious Waititi’s film will be. Or rather, what surprises he will bring for the faithful fans of the god of Thunder.
The evolution of Thor on screen
A surprising trailer sequence was the look at Thor as a character independent of his context. Until now, Thor had been the son of Odin and Frigga, the brother and adversary of Loki, and the future king of Asgard.
Already in the first movie from Thor (2011) by Kenneth Branagh a sequence of the Asgardian god as a child was shown. But this time, he is even smaller. And the trailer does something else: shows its evolution. From a child passing an unknown adolescent version of Thor to the current one. The timeline makes it clear that this is a story that, for the first time, shows only Thor as a character.
That look at Thor at different ages could prove a persistent rumor that the film will bring back an important arc of the character in the comics. Namely: that at some point there will be a confluence between the three ages of the hero to face Gorr. A journey through time that could coincide with the new way in which Marvel understands its most recent stories.
A curious detail Thor: Love and Thunder? In the image of the adult Thor he wears the traditional costume of the comics.
From warrior to free god in Thor: Love and Thunder
One of the phrases that Thor is heard saying in the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder makes it clear that he will no longer be the hero we knew. Or at least, not the extraordinary version of him and ready to face, hammer in hand, his enemies. That places Taika Waititi’s Thor right after the events of The Avengers: Endgame. And delve into an idea of interest. Did Thor decide to dedicate his life to exploring the galaxy without a higher purpose? Or at least not the one that was an essential goal of the character through the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“These hands were once used for battle, now they are but humble tools for peace,” says Thor. And he makes it clear that it will be the starting point for a completely different journey to new places of himself.
Back to the origins of the god
One of the most controversial points, and the one that was most debated among fans during the premiere of Endgame, was his way of showing Thor. To do it through a physical aspect very different from the one he had had until then. Of course, the so-called Fat Thor opened the controversy if the film mocked the appearance of a depressed and emotionally unstable god of thunder. But in reality, it was something more. Thor going through a low point in his life reflected it in how he looked.
And in fact, one of the points of interest in the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is to show what happened at that particular point. Once he has recovered from the fear, pain and sorrow of his failure against Thanos, it seems that Thor will dedicate efforts to recover his physical strength. And that includes a brief training scene. Attention to the cap that shines and in which it can be read “the strongest avenger”
Thor and the guardians of the galaxy go together
And while everything doesn’t seem to be going well — Quill’s discomfort with Thor’s behavior is noticeable — there are hints that they’re a team. And one where the Thor is really enjoying the experience of being completely free of ties and responsibilities. And that the team the saga directed by James Gunn will have a prominent place in the argument.
On the cruise with old friends in Thor: Love and Thunder
For some mysterious reason, it seems that Thor and Korg will return to Sakarr in Thor: Love and Thunder Or so the trailer has shown. Which could involve a new meeting with the Grand Master (Jeff Goldblum).
Is it a way to help the planet after the chaos in which it was presumably plunged after the revolution in Thor: Ragnarök? The advance does not contribute more than a very short scene to the general information. But a cosa is sure: nothing is simple on the most chaotic planet in the known cosmos. And much less, with a leader who has some scores to settle with Thor.
And a bit of the mythology of Thor in the comic for the big screen
Much to the delight of readers of the original comic, Thor’s mighty goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder will be a part of the film. Or so he has let it see the advance on Thor: Love and Thunder. It is an immediate mythological reference that shows the image of the Norse god narrated in the skaldic poem Haustlöng. According to the text, Thor’s chariot was pushed by two goats that the god could eat and then bring back to life.
With a less tragic version (and certainly less bloody) Thor’s goats will be part of Thor: Love and Thunder. In fact, They are part of the comic since 1976. For the occasion, the sequence shows the magical creature, pulling an Asgardian ship that leaves New Asgard.
New magical lands in Thor: Love and Thunder
And finally, Marvel’s Olympus will make its grand appearance in the studio’s cinematic universe. A look at the kingdom of Zeus (played by Russell Crowe) has made it clear that Marvel will be taking a tour of interest in another of his mythical locales. This is an interesting fact. in the series Moon Knight (Moon Night) is explored in the Egyptian pantheon according to The House of Ideas. With the addition of the Greek, there will be a host of new gods in the middle of the franchise’s timeline.
Thor with a new look
As the marketing around the film had already announced, the trailer confirmed that Thor will wear a new suit for Thor: Love and Thunder. In shades of red, blue and gold, it is perhaps the evolution of the traditional costume that he will apparently also wear at some point.
Is it an evolution? Character growth? Perhaps, it is even related to his subsequent encounter with one of the most anticipated characters in the film. The female version of the god.
A new villain at the door
And although he wasn’t shown in the trailer, the film’s new villain leaves a long trail to follow. Gorr, the butcher of the gods played by Christian Bale, has an indirect appearance in the trailer. It happens when the images show Thor and Korg looking at a dead creature of gigantic proportions. The image seems to be copied from Thor’s comic book adventures and can, in fact, be found in Jason Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder #3.
Falligar’s corpse is shown in the trailer. In the traditional story of Thor in the comics, Falligar is a good friend of Thor and one of Gorr’s victims. in his cosmic revenge.
The rebirth of New Asgard in Thor: Love and Thunder
For Thor: Love and Thunder, the inconspicuous fishing village that had become the last Asgardian settlement transforms into something more. In the advance it has been possible to see New Asgard turned into a tourist attraction and one with what seems like a new place in the world. The same could be said of Valkyrie, turned into a political leader sitting at the head of a negotiating table with various leaders. The scene makes it clear that the character’s promise upon being named queen — “some things will change around here” she told Thor — was fulfilled.
And a new Thor arrives
Of course, the most talked about scene in the trailer was that of Lady Thor receiving Mjolnir in her hands. But besides the surprise of see Natalie Portman in the traditional costume of Thor and wielding the mythical weapon, there is also a detail of interest. The hammer held by Mighty Thor/Jane Foster is full of cracks and appears to be a new version of the one destroyed by Hela.

Where then is the one used by Thor in the final battle of Endgame? There are no details about it, but that could mean that each version of Thor would have his own hammer. And especially, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor would also carry Stormbreaker.
