You should not expect it to be a difficult video game, as it maintains Mario’s proposal regarding being accessible to the whole family and fun from the visual to the playability. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad.
The levels are fun and appeal for replayability, since it is not a large game in the first instance, but it is a title that appeals to getting all the collectibles to extend the duration.
A Nintendo-style version of Dumbo
When Shigeru Miyamoto created Link, one of his intentions in designing the character was to establish a similarity with Disney’s Peter Pan and that is why he dresses in green and with a characteristic hat, but then the character took on his own personality until become a video game icon.
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder something similar happens, because although the elephant power-up and the Wonder Flower remind us of the Dumbo scene with dancing pink elephants, but with all the attitude and adapted to Nintendo’s game dynamics. Sometimes you can finish the levels with this dynamic and visually it is very nice.
Another element that represents an evolution for two-dimensional Mario games are the tokens that enhance certain characteristics of the characters, such as having a hat to be able to plan, which on an aesthetic and gameplay level is quite fresh.
On a visual level, you cannot deny the care that the developers put into this title, because each element on the stage is as important as the scenery of a theater. There are even things in the background of some levels that you would think were just a matter of decoration, but as you progress you realize that it is part of the game and becomes a pleasant surprise.
On the other hand, the multiplayer mode has outstanding aspects, such as the fact of collaboration and freneticism to complete the levels, but it is a point in which more attention was lacking, since it is not a truly competitive or cooperative experience, that is, , the game focuses only on the player’s progress with the first controller and forgets about the others. In case they are late, the game practically forgets them.
Another element against it is that it forgets the individuality of the characters. In previous games in the franchise, Mario was a neutral character, Luigi jumped higher, while Peach took the lead to cover more distance or Toad was faster. This time, that is completely forgotten and all the characters are practically the same.
Regarding the map, although the levels are very varied from one another and are very well built, Nintendo forgot about the Nintendo DS era in which it added minigames and although it is not something essential, it is something that is missed and we hope will be resumed at some point.
However, where they did pay a lot of attention was in the dubbing. Charles Martinet is no longer the voice of Mario, but audiences in Latin America will be delighted to hear that the game is dubbed into the region’s Spanish and the flowers will speak to us in an accent that we can identify with.
