Ariel Treviño Peña, better known as “El Tigre”, head of the Gulf Cartel in the cell of Scorpions, was killed by the Mexican armed forces in Tamaulipas, one of the most important blows to drug trafficking during the week.
This was announced by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) in a statement to public opinion, where they revealed that everything happened during the attacks in the border municipality of Matamoros.
It all started after assaults on the state police and during 10 road blockades that prevented free traffic on highways in the aforementioned municipality in the state of Tamaulipas.
This is how Mexican Army personnel got to work and while they were doing some surveillance patrols on Boulevard Manuel Cavazos Lerma, they noticed strange activity.
The data indicates that two trucks in suspicious attitude, one of them armored and without license plates. The persecution began immediately.
However, the criminals, realizing the situation, began the imminent attack against the security agents; for this, they used heavy caliber weapons from inside the units. Their objective was to get the military vehicle off the road to evade the seizure.
However, they encountered a group that repelled aggression almost immediately to finally get the unit out of the way and achieve the arrest of four members of the group.
“El Tigre” and two other people died at the scene as a result of the bullets, they assured through an official document.
When reviewing their credentials, they pointed out that “El Tigre”, an alleged member of the Gulf Cartel, had a arrest warrant for the crime of aggravated kidnapping.
The man was considered one of the main generators of violence in the state of Tamaulipas; Head of the plaza for the Nuevo Progreso area and a priority objective for local justice, in addition to being sought by federal agencies of the United States.
Presumably he was currently working as hawk chief for the Gulf Cartel in Matamoros. He is also credited with having coordinated ambushes against the military and threats to a military command.
During the arrest, the seizure of 7 firearms, cartridges, chargers and 2 vehicles was also achieved. For their part, the detained persons were placed at the disposal of the competent authorities.
