The advances of Spider-Man: Crossing the Multiverse They show what seems to be the most ambitious bet to cover the world of the hero. In addition to the emblematic miles morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), the plot promises to bring a whole collection of new faces to the movies. What includes Michael O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), to Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), the Indian version of the hero, and the original character of Spider-Woman.
The most interesting addition is undoubtedly that of Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), an iconic character within the so-called spider verse. known as Spider-Womanits origin dates back to 1977 and it was one of the first figures related to Peter Parker to achieve independent recognition. Furthermore, it allowed the context of the superhero to be expanded and diversified into dozens of new settings.
The most curious thing about his story —at least, in the first version— is that it is related to the villain of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). Which would link two of the great releases of the year based on the publishing world of Marvel. Both one and the other seem to link their narrative, in addition to resizing the multiverse on a much deeper scale. Whatever role you play Jessica Drew as Spider-Woman in the animated film will be crucial not only for the future of spider-man and its context. Also for the probable explorations in the multitude of time lines that his long influence encompasses.
The story on paper of Spider-Woman
The comic book debut of Spider-Woman it was in Marvel Spotlight #32published in February 1977. Created by Archie Goodwin, Sal Buscema, and Jim Mooney, she was actually an anonymous villain, only nicknamed Arachne as a key name. That first appearance revealed that he was part of HYDRA and that, furthermore, he was a virtually invincible creature. However, no other information about her or her beginnings was detailed. What the comic did make clear is that she had the same powers as Spider-Man, without – for the moment – there being a link between them.
However, the following issue included all kinds of data that allowed the construction of its first version. According to the comic, Jessica was kidnapped as a child by HYDRA. It was not specified where his powers came from or what caused his bodily changes, which included super strength and spewing spider web fluids. In the hands of the organization, Spider-Woman suffered torture and forced recruitment that would make her an agent of blind obedience. It is this variation of the character that she fights with. Nick Fury and is briefly regarded as an evil being that must be destroyed.
in the edition of Marvel Two-in-One #30–33 by Marv Wolfman, written by John Buscema and Ron Wilson in 1978, the storytelling evolved. Receiving the name Jessica Drew, the character goes through her great redemption. After failing to kill Fury and Alice Masters to the orders of HYDRA, he ends up understanding the manipulation he suffers. So she escapes and recovers her identity. At the same time, Spider-Woman recovers her memories, which allowed the writers to delve into a more elaborate fictional biography and which gave her the opportunity, now, to become a heroine.
Jessica Drew’s ties to the Marvel universe
By 1979, the new member —albeit indirectly— of the universe of spider-man I already had a denser story. Which included a tie-in to a traditional Marvel villain. Always as written by Marv Wolfman, Jessica was born in 1924 into a wealthy family. His father was a renowned scientist named jonathan drewspecialized in the investigation of evolution and forms of DNA integration.
Also, I had a lab partner obsessed with modifying the human species into a more advanced type of creature. Herbert Wyndhambetter known as the High Evolutionarywas close to the family and was attentive to the investigations of Jonathan. Especially when the latter crossed the theoretical limit and led Spider-Woman’s father to exhaustive analysis of hybrids.
When Jessica was just two years old, her parents moved to the plot they Herbert Wyndham had acquired in the Wundagore Mountain. They later discovered that the nearby lands were rich in uranium, which allowed the two of them to settle down and build a research facility. Also create a private territory in which no country – including trasiaplace of location of the property—could intervene.
The prelude to a tragedy
Both scientists began exhaustive work, which also included genetic research through radioactive properties. But they soon lost control of their various experiments and generated a zone of high toxic levels. After getting lost in the region, little Jessica Drew, already seven years old, would become seriously ill.
In a desperate attempt to find a cure for his illness, his father relied in part on his experiments and those of wyndham. One possibility was to produce a serum with the regenerative qualities of the arachnid nature. Something in which the future High Evolutionary he had worked to find a means of purging the human race of its weaknesses through interspecies mixing.
But the future Spider-Woman did not respond to the extreme treatment. To avoid a worsening, her father decided to plunge her into a dream in the so-called genetic accelerator. An artifact, built by wyndham, which would prevent him from dying or aging and would allow him to educate himself through recordings inside the chamber. The decision was supposed to give Jonathan enough time to continue with the research until he found an effective cure for his daughter’s various ailments.
The unexpected result of his dream
Decades later, Jessica Drew woke up. She found out that her mother had died and her father had abandoned her to return to the US and had not been heard from. During that time, the High Evolutionary he had taken care to keep her alive and to analyze her improvement. Jessica was cured. However, when leaving the chamber, the future Spider-Woman was no longer a child, but a fourteen-year-old teenager. Despite the precautions of the scientists, she failed to slow down her aging.
At the same time, during the long sleep he gained all sorts of powers, from telepathy and superhuman strength, to the ability to create spider webs. Maddened with confusion and grief, Spider-Woman flees from Wundagore to a nearby town, where he accidentally murders a man. In the aftermath of her event, she is persecuted and almost killed by an angry mob of neighbors who consider her a monster.
This is the point where the original 1977 story meets the one written later. In the midst of her escape, Jessica Drew is rescued by the Count. Otto Vermisof HYDRA. He saves her, tortures her cruelly until she forgets her past, and then sends her on her first failed mission. Will kill Nick Fury.
The heroine returns as Spider-Woman
In 2005, the series Spider-Woman: Origin, by Brian Michael Bendis, Brian Reed, Jonathan Luna and Joshua Luna, would once again change history. This time, it would be rewritten in a simplified way. From the elaborate narrative that included the High Evolutionary, Jessica Drew it would now be seen as a failed experiment of his father’s. What would also allow him to acquire unknown powers —such as climbing walls and flying— and formally integrate the spider verse. This version of Spider-Woman would also recount that, once free of the influence of HYDRAthe heroine returned to North America and settled in San Francisco.
