One of the biggest draws in Japan for all players, no matter where they are from, has always been the arcades. Unlike other parts of the world, where these sites have disappeared, in the country of the Rising Sun these establishments are part of the player’s culture. In this way, it is sad to see that, after 28 years in the market, the SEGA Ikebukuro Gigo has closed its doors.
Last month, SEGA announced that its Ikebukuro Gigo arcade would close its doors on September 20, 2021. Said and done, yesterday was the last time this establishment received people. Thus, hundreds of fans gathered to say goodbye to this iconic establishment.
With banners and T-shirts, the public said goodbye to SEGA Ikebukuro Gigo, which first opened in 1993. Although one might think that the closure of this store is due to COVID-19, similar to what happened with the Akihabara arcade last year, the store manager noted that its closure is due to problems with the renovation of the building. This was what he commented:
“If it were in my power, I would like to stay open forever at this location and greet the happy faces of our wonderful customers. Unfortunately, at this point, it turned out that the game room was closed. “
Without a doubt, sad news for arcade fans, and one less place that tourists will visit in the future. Let’s remember that last year SEGA Sammy Holdings sold 85% of these stores to focus more on console games.
