Realme has just presented the realme X50 5G, a mid-range terminal that democratizes the connectivity of the future and has performed at the height of a flagship.
The Chinese manufacturer has already made a foray into the fifth-generation networks sector with a high-end, the realme X50 Pro, whose price rose to 600 euros. However, the essence of the brand goes through the mid-range, since the rest of its terminals are usually below 300 euros.
With this new device, realme seeks to incorporate premium features, traditionally reserved for flagships to low-cost terminals without sacrificing price.
The Chinese company has not stopped celebrating victories since its arrival in Spain a year ago. In just 6 months, it managed to climb to the top 5 of best-selling phones in Spain and, recently, with the launch of its new realme 6 and with all the coronavirus crisis in between, it managed to position itself as the most purchased smartphone on Amazon in this 2020 the same day of the launch.
Now, I have been able to test the realme X50 5G for a few days to see how the Chinese company maintains the price on a mobile that tries to prepare for the future.
Although there are clearly sections, such as the photographic, in which there is no notable innovation compared to other models in the same range, the realme X50 5G has left me very impressed with its spectacular performance and a 120Hz refresh rate that totally change the experience and I think it will convince demanding users.
If you want to discover the strengths and weaknesses of the new realme mobile, read on.
Refresh rate is a nod to gamers
It is a large and somewhat heavy mobile. The 6.57-inch IPS screen is protected with Corning Gorilla 5, and has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels.
This panel dispenses with the notch and houses the front double chamber in a hole on the left side, something it already did with the Realme 6.
The highlight is its 120Hz refresh rate. If you do not know what it is, it is basically a data that indicates the times that a screen refreshes its image per second: in this case, 120 times.
This means that all the navigation happens in a very fluid way and the contents load very quickly. Currently, it is the highest refresh rate on the market and is also found in high-end mobiles such as the OnePlus 8 Pro, the X3 SuperZoom (from the same Realme) and the Samsung Galaxy S20.
On the screen, there is also the fingerprint reader, which provides extra security, as well as facial recognition. Neither has given me problems, although it is somewhat uncomfortable that it is located on the side of the mobile phone – since it is an area where it is very easy to press it by accident.
The design follows the elegant line of realme, but ask for a cover
The design is very elegant. It has curved edges and is committed to metallic that produces reflections and shapes with the impact of light
The only problem is that the prints will be very obvious, so you better put a cover on it.
One of the keys to this mobile is its connectivity since it introduces 5G in the mid-range
In the connectivity section, the realme X50 stands out for the 5G. It also has USB Type-C for high-speed transfer, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0.
However, and this is something totally personal, I miss having a jack to connect the headphones, although it could be a strategic move. The company has also launched the realme Buds Q wireless headphones today, so the absence of a jack could make the user choose them.
The battery allows you to get through a full day without problems and the saving mode is really useful
The realme X50 5G carries a 4,200 mAh battery that has allowed me to get through a full day and even arrive the next morning without having to charge it. Of course, almost exclusively connected to WiFi.
Autonomy has dropped a few hours on weekends, when mobile use has changed from calls, messages and internet searches to more active use of social networks, streaming video and games. However, it will not leave you stranded, as it lasts well the whole day.
In case of seeing you in an emergency, the mobile includes 30W fast charging, which allows it to reach around 70% in half an hour and is completed in less than an hour.
It has a functionality that is accessed through settings that allows you to save battery and is really useful. Identify high-drain apps and allow them to be disabled, as well as apps running in the background.
The behavior is really excellent and it has been, without a doubt, what surprised me most about the phone
With the 120 Hz refresh rate, you could already guess that the realme mobile was aimed at demanding users. The phone’s performance confirms that the company wants to ensure the best experience.
It mounts the Snapdragon 765G that is thought to give coverage to 5G and is Qualcomm’s most powerful mid-range processor. When it introduced the new model, the company introduced improvements aimed at enhancing mobile phones designed for gaming thanks to its Adreno 620 GPU.
Translated in my experience of these days with mobile, this not only tolerates any open application but offers an excellent result in demanding games.
This is accompanied by 6GB of RAM, normal for this type of device.
As for the software, it comes with Android 10 and the manufacturer’s new customization layer, realme UI, which has offered me satisfactory results.
Some outstanding features have seemed to me the Mode without distractions, which allows you to pause the applications that distract you when you need to concentrate; or the possibility of using gestures to activate some functions of the mobile with the screen off.
In the photographic section, the realme X50 fulfills without problems with a couple of interesting characteristics
The realme X50 5G offers a quad rear camera that is organized like this.
- A 48-megapixel main sensor.
- A wide-angle lens with an 8-megapixel sensor.
- The third sensor with a telephoto lens (up to 5x hybrid).
- A 2-megapixel macro camera for close-up shots of objects that are very close to the phone.
On the front, it has a double 16 and 8-megapixel camera.
Portrait mode seemed very natural to me, especially on the front camera, and it was one of my big favorites. The macro lens has also convinced me.
For the rest, the mobile complies without problems but does not make the photographic section its distinctive for the competition.
The main lens is 48 megapixels and offers results with more than acceptable quality
48-megapixel lenses became very common in 2019, they are still common in mid-range mobiles such as the Huawei P40 Lite and, although they are no longer the most powerful on the market, they offer absolutely acceptable quality.
By enlarging the image you can verify that the superior image does not lose quality.
In the transition from wide-angle to zoom it is seen that the standard lens gives more than satisfactory results, but the zoom is somewhat disappointing
On the left is the photo taken with the wide-angle, and on the right with the standard lens. Both seem to me to fulfill without any type of problem.
The transition to zoom is like this. In the 5x the quality begins to falter, which is quite low in the 10x.
Indoors, the results have surprised me because it solves situations with less light or more artificial light very well.
Selfies are everything you could want and portrait mode seemed like an absolute success
Although I think the blur is slightly more natural in the front camera, I liked the portrait mode of the main camera quite a bit.
The ultra-macro sensor of this camera has undoubtedly been a great surprise and has made me fall in love
The textures are perfectly captured, although indoors it loses a little quality.
Night mode makes the photo gain definition and better captures light spots
In the light spots it is perceived that the night mode increases the definition and, both in the buildings and in the sky, it is also noted that eliminating some of the “noise” that is in the photos with less light.
Here is another example.
I leave you a small gallery so you can see what the camera is capable of
In short, the realme X50 is a mid-range with premium features for only about 350 euros
The mobile will be available first for sale on AliExpress and realme.com and, from August 7, also on official channels for a price of 349 euros.
Although the official purchase of the realme X50 5G will start on July 14, both on AliExpress Plaza and on realme.com the device can be pre-purchased from today July 8 at 11:30 in the morning.
In addition, AliExpress Plaza will launch a pre-sale offer bundle for the first 300 users who buy the realme X50 5G and the realme BudsQ together, for 329 euros. After that, the price of the realme X50 5G on AliExpress will be special, from 339 euros, until August 6.
That figure makes it one of the cheapest terminals for connectivity of the future on the market, along with the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G. This, together with the spectacular performance and the refresh rate, makes it a great bet of the company to conquer the mid-range and become a favorite of users who want premium features for the best price.
Although it does not stand out in the photographic section – although the results are satisfactory for its cost – the truth is that it complies, but the best is its power and cost.
My experience testing the device these days has really left me convinced that the realme X50 5G is very complete. In other words: it’s worth it and it won’t disappoint whoever buys it, especially the gamer audience.
