Of this percentage, 27% mentioned that their career did not meet their expectations, that it was not what they expected, or that the person does not have professional studies.
Faced with this reality, Salvador De Antuñano, director of Human Resources at Grupo Adecco Mexico, comments that the employment situation of young people is an issue that should concern and address. “The ‘college dream’ is not working as it should,” he notes.
Data collected by the International Labor Organization (ILO) show growing disillusionment among young people, who see how the “dream of a university degree” no longer guarantees a prosperous economic and employment future. Currently, only 30% of the young population in Mexico is dedicated exclusively to their studies, compared to 40% who work, often leaving aside their studies.
Within this 40%, about 80% operate without an employment contract, while approximately 47% lack employment benefits. Income is concentrated in the range of one to two minimum wages.
“It is necessary to reinforce and develop training programs and more opportunities for them,” adds De Antuñano.
Why is it important to know how to choose a career?
The director of Brújula Interior, Ana Estrada, warns about the unique challenges that young people in Mexico face when choosing their careers, highlighting that 80% are wrong in this crucial decision, a much higher proportion compared to developed countries, where only 20 or 25% of young people face this problem.
Estrada highlights that choosing a career based on knowledge of natural abilities is essential, and warns about some common causes of wrong choices. Among them is the exclusive search for contacts to be placed in a company, the prioritization of making money quickly, the influence of family or friends’ opinions and the choice driven by competition rather than by real affinity with the subjects.
The expert in vocational guidance shares a series of tips to reduce the percentage of young people who feel frustrated about their future work, considering that a correct decision leads to a better and more satisfactory professional path.
Reflect on interests and competencies. Identify motivating activities that may be profitable in the future.
Differentiate between taste and ability. Recognize the importance of finding a career that is not only done well, but also enjoyable, key to professional growth.
Research the curriculum. Seek detailed information about the subjects included in the degree, making sure that they coincide with skills, knowledge and activities that generate interest.
Consider compensation opportunities. Evaluate the balance between the professional future and the level of remuneration, analyzing the convenience of low starting salaries versus the possibility of increasing profits with specialization or opening your own business.
Imagine professional development. Visualize at least three scenarios or sectors where they can develop as professionals, considering the opportunities that each one offers.
Filter the influence of others. Recognize that there will always be external influences, positive or negative, but it is crucial to open or close listening, according to your own preferences and talents.
“Choosing a career is a decision that will affect each person’s future for the rest of their life. Through an informed and conscious choice, young people can find satisfaction and fulfillment,” he says.
