In which states is there a shortage of ice?
“Yes, there is a shortage of ice throughout the country, especially in the 5kg presentation and in stores because not many have refrigerators to store so many bags. In Colima, Guanajuato, Quintana Roo, campeche and lower california shortages are reported in grocery stores,” says the National Alliance of Small Merchants (ANPEC).
But the shortage is also due to the fact that the producing companies cannot keep up with the high demand. “There is only one supplier (of ice) for 80 stores,” said the employee of an Oxxo unit located in Coyoacán, in CDMX, where ice has been conspicuous by its absence for three days. When consulted by Expansión, the worker said that he does not have an estimated date for the arrival of the ice.
They can’t keep up with the demand for ice, water and beers
The Querétaro Chamber of Commerce recognized on Monday that the demand for ice and popsicles has increased 20% in the last 15 days, due to extreme weather. Therefore, its partners are making efforts at the logistical level to supply ice and bottled water to all retailers.
In all entities of the country, daily temperatures have approached record levels, also causing an unprecedented demand for bottled water, which is why some stores quickly run out of jugs.
“Inventory levels are not keeping up with demand. Sales have increased in the last month by 56.6% in terms of bottled, mineral and flavored water; by 32.9% in cola soft drinks; in 9.8% flavored soft drinks and 80% beer,” says ANPEC.
