What is identity theft and how does it happen?
Identity theft or misappropriation is when a person improperly obtains, transfers or uses another’s personal data, usually to commit fraud or crime.
According to the Condusef, criminals generally pose as your bank and request your data by phone call, text message, mail and even social networks, telling you that you have received a prize or benefit, or who want to validate an operation that you allegedly performed. To do this, they may request data such as: Name, telephone number, address, credit card numbers and bank accounts, your PIN, the security numbers of your cards, usernames and passwords of your online banking, among others.
Identity theft in Mexico
In the data update of the Bureau of Financial Entities, the Condusef indicates that from January to September 2021, 49,871 complaints of identity theft were registered against banks in Mexico, this represents a growth of 54% compared to 2020.
How to avoid identity theft
- Never give out your bank account information over the phone, text, email, or social media.
- Come to your bank to request prevention services and alert systems; It will allow you to detect strange charges or movements in your accounts in a timely manner.
- Change your passwords frequently.
- Check your account statements regularly.
- Do not click on links sent by email supposedly from your bank.
- Do not download applications if you are not sure that it is your bank that requests it.
- Constantly consult your Credit Bureau.
