One of the changes of Android 12 that has not finished convincing everyone is to unify the quick settings of Wi-Fi and Internet by one called Internet. The functionality is technically the same, but implies taking another step to turn Wi-Fi or data on or off.
Now Google has explained the reasons behind the change in a post on their forums, in addition to promising that one of the additional problems that this new panel has will be solved soon: that it is not accessible without unlocking the mobile.
The new Internet panel does not arouse passions
Android 12 changes two quick settings that have been there since time immemorial, those that allow turn Wi-Fi and data on or off. Instead, there is a single setting called Internet, which displays a panel where, here, you can enable or disable the Wi-Fi and data network.
In practice is an extra touchIn addition to not being able to make the adjustment without unlocking the mobile, which has made some users see an example of “if something is broken, don’t fix it.” Google has explained the logic behind this change in a blog post:
With this new design, you can quickly switch between Wi-Fi and data connections by simply selecting your data network in the new Internet Panel.
From our user studies, we found that most users turn off Wi-Fi to force their phone to use data. This is usually done in response to a poor Wi-Fi connection and the lack of an alternative way to make the phone explicitly connect to the operator.
Users who turn off Wi-Fi often forget to turn it back on, resulting in possible excessive use of mobile data. Our research showed that this has been a pain point for users, so we made the decision to address it with this release.
With the changes we’re making, users with Wi-Fi connection issues can simply switch and use their carrier with two quick taps. In our user research studies, longtime Android users acknowledged that the change took some getting used to, but once they did, they found the Dashboard to be a more intuitive and straightforward way for users to solve their problems. Wi-Fi connectivity issues, while reducing user errors and unintended consequences.
According to Google, the main reason for the change is that users who deactivate Wi-Fi due to poor connectivity they forget to activate it again later, therefore making greater use of data. It’s really not clear how the new panel makes it easier for the user to remember to turn on Wi-Fi again, as it is basically the same, but with one more twist.
However, according to Google studies, this new system meant a more intuitive and direct way so that users could turn off Wi-Fi when they have connectivity problems, although they acknowledge that it took them a while to get to the new system.
Another limitation of this panel is that it does not It is accessible with the mobile lockedWhile the old Wi-Fi and data settings were. There will be news in this regard: in a future Pixel Feature Drop, the panel will be accessible from the lock screen to disable data or Wi-Fi.
