ChatGPT is about to become the substitute for your personal assistant on your mobile. The chatbot has capabilities that far exceed Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant, with voice chat being the most useful. Just activate the command to have a conversation with OpenAI’s artificial intelligence
Voice chat support allows you to speak through your mobile speaker with five different ChatGPT voices. Unlike Alexa or Siri, interactions are more natural and can be extended to offer more context. Users can ask the AI about a specific topic and get a detailed response, just like in text chats.
This is possible thanks to a text-to-speech model capable of generating responses from an audio sample of a few seconds. ChatGPT can chat with you, tell you a bedtime story, or start a debate. OpenAI stated that they use Whisper, an open source speech recognition system, and that they have collaborated with voice actors to create each of the voices.
While the focus is on the English language, ChatGPT can chat with you in Spanish. Of course, the answers will not sound like a native person, but rather like the voice of a tourist who has been living in Spain for some years.
How to activate voice chat in ChatGPT
Voice conversations are not enabled by default in ChatGPT. To activate them we must first touch the button with the headphones icon and then choose the voice we want. The chatbot has 5 different voices (3 women and 2 men) and allows you to choose your native language.
ChatGPT offers two options to communicate by voice: recording instructions or hands-free. The first is activated by pressing the small button located at the end of the text box and requires the user to record their message and send it. This is similar to sending a voice note via WhatsApp or Messenger and is recommended when you are looking for a quick consultation.
The Hands-free conversations are activated with the button on the headphones. In this option we only need to talk to ChatGPT as if we were on a conventional call and we will get natural responses. The interface allows you to pause the chat or exit it by touching the respective buttons.
It is important to mention that Conversations will take place in the language you configure in the Appso if you make a query in English ChatGPT will respond in Spanish. Another point to consider is that interactions are stored in your history in text format, so you can access them later for consultation or to delete them.
How to turn ChatGPT into your personal assistant on Android
One of the weak points of ChatGPT voice chat is that it requires two additional steps to activate it. Unlike Alexa or Google Assistant, You can’t say “Hey ChatGPT” to start a conversation. Users have to open the app and press a button to make queries, which would reduce points compared to the immediacy of other personal assistants.
The good news is that that is changing, since ChatGPT implemented support for a shortcut on Android which allows faster access and from any app. In accordance with 9to5Googlethe ChatGPT beta for Android (v 1.2024.017 and .018) includes the option to Summon AI and activate a full screen conversation. The operation is identical to what we see within the OpenAI application, with the advantage that we can do it at any time.
This is the first step to replace Google Assistant on Android, a mission that Sam Altman and company are already carrying out. Android Authority reported a few weeks ago that the APK includes some clues that suggest that OpenAI’s artificial intelligence would become the default mobile assistant. When activating the instruction com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity, ChatGPT would replace the Google Assistant and inherit its commands.
At the moment there are no details about its possible arrival or what Google’s response will be. Let’s remember that Google Assistant will make way for a more robust version of Bard in the near future. One of its advantages will be Integration with Android services and featuressomething that OpenAI does not have at the moment.
How to use ChatGPT with Siri on your iPhone
If you have an iPhone and want to enhance Siri with OpenAI’s artificial intelligence, it is now possible. ChatGPT integrates natively with Siri through Shortcuts. The process is simple, although requires an API key from the OpenAI website. It is advisable to perform the following steps from your iPhone, since you will have to download a Shortcut and add the key as text.
- Accede to Openai.com and then go to Menu > Login to log in with your account.
- Once inside, select API and tap the OpenAI icon in the upper left corner to open the side menu and access API Keys.
- Touch the button Create new secret key to get your key and copy the text.
- Download the SiriGPT shortcut from this link and tap the three buttons to edit it
- Paste your key text (step 3) into the section that says “ADD API HERE”, scroll down and activate dictation in “Enable Dictation”
- Run SiriGPT in the Shortcuts app and authorize both options (voice recognition and interact with OpenAI.com)
- Ready, you can now use Siri with ChatGPT
Another alternative is to download the Shortcut created by David Bernal and Fran Besora and follow the same procedure. Once done, just say “Hey Siri, ChatGPT” to invoke the assistant and use OpenAI’s AI. The Shortcuts can be used on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
