Google Chrome’s grouped tabs have been around for a few years now, although not everyone is satisfied with this feature. Even less, when for a few months it is no longer possible to deactivate the grouping of tabs even by adjusting a Chrome Flag. In return, Google has announced two tests related to tab grouping which are already available in Google Chrome Beta.
The Google Chrome support page has been filled with many requests so that tab grouping can be disabled. This does not appear to be coming at the moment, but instead Google has announced two experimental changes, including a menu to open in a new tab (not grouped).
Less clustering in Google Chrome
If you don’t like tab grouping in Google Chrome for Android, we’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that at the moment there is still no way to completely disable it. The good news is that Google is testing two new features to reduce clustering and give you more control about when a tab will be grouped.
This has been made known by Google on its support page, informing that user comments have been heard and that they are experiencing some changes in the operation of the groups of tabs. The first of them, links that open in a new tab will not be automatically added to the group, as has happened until now.
On the other hand, the contextual menu of a link -the one that appears when you make a long touch on a link- will give you the possibility to open the link in a new tab or in a new tab in the group, depending on the option you choose. In the stable version of Google Chrome, the only option that appears is to open a new tab in a group.
These two experiments are available already in Google Chrome Beta, although they are not activated with Chrome Flags, but from the server side. For this reason, Google informs that if it is the first time that you install the Google Chrome beta, you will have to leave the application open for about five minutes and close and reopen it for these two changes to be applied. It remains to be seen if these experiments will reach the official version soon.
