Juan Pablo Martín del Campo, director of the AMFIM, considers that the change towards electrification will happen first in four-wheel vehicles, before two. The numbers show that his forecast could be right.
Throughout 2021, 47,079 hybrid and electric vehicles were sold in Mexico, which meant 4.6% of total placements in the market. The AMFIM estimates that of the 1,250,000 units to be sold this year, 1%, or even less, could be electric.
Italikawhich ventured into electrification with the model electric Voltium Gravity, envisions that it will be a gradual change. “If we see how (the progress of electrification) has happened in the automotive industry, it has been gradual: from combustion engines, it went to hybrid and now there are many assemblers that already have an interesting proposal in completely electric vehicles,” he highlights. in interview with Expansion.
“In the motorcycle market, it is a path that is beginning in Mexico and that without a doubt in the years to come it will take on relevance”, he adds.
BMW, For example, the goal of one launch electrical unit every 12 or 24 months. Worldwide, the brand sells two electric motorcycles, but only offer in Mexico the scooter CE 04.
Ian Belmares, head of network development at BMW Motorrad, believes that the electrification of motorcycles will first impact the urban segments, before those focused on large displacement focused on long trips.
“On a motorcycle, the batteries are smaller, and autonomy is a function of that. An urban use allows you to charge it in a shopping center or at home, ”he says in an interview with Expansion. “All brands are moving towards greater autonomy, which will be reflected in the coming years,” she added.
For Pablo Barrios, commercial and operations director of Triumphan English brand that plans to launch its first electric model towards the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, a short-term solution to limited autonomy is the installation of more charging infrastructure, especially on roads.
“You can have your electric motorcycle, but where do you charge it? There are no charging stations, there are no gas stations that are or have the infrastructure. That makes an implementation in the market more difficult”, she argues in an interview with Expansion.
today there are 1,189 charging stations distributed throughout the national territory, with 2,193 connectors. Mexico City accumulates the majority of stations, with 272, followed by Jalisco with 126, at the other extreme is Tlaxcala with two and Campeche with five, according to figures released by the National Auto Parts Industry.
“The electrification of motorcycles is going to happen, we will begin to see it in a more realistic way in the next 8 or 10 years. Now we are in the first phases, right where the vehicle assemblers were 8 or 9 years ago”, says Martín del Campo in an interview with Expansion.
