“The growth of electronic commerce will continue for at least five years,” Ingo Babrikowski, CEO of Estafeta, told a press conference. “You have to see the relationship that electronic commerce has in total commerce, which is still very low; the most advanced country is China, with 50% of electronic commerce in the total, and in the United States it is at 20%. That of Mexico we estimate that it is at 4-5%, which is still going to be converted to e-commerce It is immense”.
The Mexican company comes from a period of unexpected growth, mainly driven by the pandemic. In 2020, the accelerated demand for shipments for online sales forced the company to increase up to 50% of its capacity in just three months, for which it closed the year with an investment of 830 million pesos in its operations, a 25 % more than expected. For this year, the projection is to increase the figure to 1,950 million pesos.
Today, electronic commerce represents around 48% of the volume transported by the company, and although this index is expected to change, it is difficult to predict how it will do so, explains José García, Estafeta’s director of operations.
“Next year we expect an economic recovery in other sectors that we serve in Estafeta, such as the automotive, pharmaceutical and B2B sectors. [business to business]. In percentage terms, it is difficult to predict how much the current market will move today. e-commerce represents for the company, ”he said.
In addition to an increase in capacities, the company is exploring other strategies, such as the inclusion of electric vehicles in its fleet, which it is currently evaluating with two brands and which it hopes to start testing next year in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Will also install lockers so that your customers can collect their orders at a single point.
“It is important to increase the density of deliveries at a single point (…) We hope to create points where we can deliver, deposit packages for customers to pick them up at a place of their convenience,” said Babrikowski.
