He Model 2 It is, without a doubt, one of the projects of tesla that generates more expectation. And although we have already had a sort of preliminary look at the expected 25,000 euro model, there is still much to know. However, Elon Musk has already defined where it will be manufactured and it may come as a surprise to many.
As reported Reutersthe Tesla Model 2 It will be manufactured at the Berlin Gigafactory, in Germany. The tycoon confirmed the news last Friday, during a visit to the facilities of his company in German territory. In any case, no further details have been disclosed in this regard.
Elon Musk’s recent visit to Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin is a fact. On X (Twitter), videos of the businessman thanking employees for the efforts made throughout this year have been published. In addition, he would have taken the opportunity to announce a 4% salary increase for all staff at the German plant, which would become effective this month.
For now, It is unknown when manufacturing of the Tesla Model 2 would begin in Germany. Let us keep in mind that these facilities today are focused on the Model Y, the best-selling electric car in the world in 2022 and the third most sold vehicle globally, also accounting for gasoline and diesel vehicles.
The Tesla Model 2 would be manufactured in Germany, at least in principle
What it informs Reuters seems to expose a kind of contradiction within Tesla regarding the production of the Model 2. Let us remember that Elon Musk’s original idea was for this car to be produced in the Gigafactory that will be installed in Mexico. However, the businessman would have been forced to change his decision.
On the one hand, this would be because, for the 25,000 euro model to be a success, it would require the permanent presence of the Tesla engineering team in that factory. And a relocation of such magnitude would be unfeasible. That is why, as Musk revealed to Walter Isaacson, the author of his biography, he decided to change the plan and start production at the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.
But the story would not end there. Delays in the construction of the Mexico Gigafactory would also play their part in the change of headquarters for the original Tesla Model 2 production line. The Mexican plant was initially expected to be operational in 2025, but work there could be delayed until 2027.
Having said all this, it is not clear if Elon Musk’s new idea is to bring the production of the Tesla Model 2 to Berlin exclusively, or that takes place simultaneously in Germany and the United States. When the magnate presented the silhouette of the new economic model, he assured that the idea was to take advantage of it to definitively revolutionize the way cars are manufactured.
Tesla is already evolving its assembly lines with the Model Y, but it aims to take them to another level with the Model 2. The 25,000 euro vehicle aims to be more scalable, with 75% fewer semiconductors such as transistors and chips, and with a powertrain compatible with any type of battery, as explained in May.
Will the Gigafactory Berlin be the first “home” of the Tesla Model 2? For now, we have to wait for more news. Although it would not be unusual for it to be part of the company’s plan to increase the production of these facilities to one million vehicles per year.
