The current popularity of artificial intelligence It has influenced different aspects of life, to a greater or lesser extent. Television and cinema do not escape this. In this sense, the most recent example is its use for the preparation of the presentation of secret invasionof the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The appeal is not indifferent to different personalities, such as Christopher Nolandirector of oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan is recognized as one of the most careful contemporary directors in terms of technical issues. His filmography could be celebrated and questioned at the same time due to the recording methods used or the technological bets used in different processes. In that sense, what opinion does the director have about the use of artificial intelligence in cinema and some other areas of life?
In a recent interview given to Wiredabout the upcoming premiere of oppenheimer, the filmmaker reflected on this question and was interested, rather than in the resource itself, in the responsibility implicit in its use. As the phrase says: “It is not the weapon, but the carrier.”
Christopher Nolan and his perspective on artificial intelligence
There is a school of thought that compares the development of artificial intelligence as a technological leap similar to the one that occurred, at the time, with the atomic bomb. What does that part of the story have to do with Christopher Nolan? He is the director of oppenheimerthe film that explores how this weapon of mass destruction was created.
Christopher Nolan ruled out that fair comparisons can be established between both issues and historical moments. In his words: “The relationship is interesting. Is not the same. But it’s the best analogy, that’s why I used it in Tenet, to recreate the dangers of unleashing a new technology on the world without thinking. It is a story with a moral. There are lessons to be learned from it.” That comment was completed with the following clarification: “Having said that, I think the atomic bomb is unique in terms of technologies that have changed and endangered the world.”.
Putting the subject of artificial intelligence on the table, the director continued to deepen his vision of the resource: “I feel that artificial intelligence can still be a very powerful tool for us.. I am optimistic about it. I really am. But we have to see it as a tool.”
What does this imply? In the words of Christopher Nolan, it represents the following: “The person who handles it still has to maintain the responsibility of controlling that tool. If we grant artificial intelligence the status of a human being, as we legally did at one point with corporations, then yes, we will be in big trouble.”
Questioned about the possibility of using the tool for cinematographic issues and a possible positive impact, the director said: “All machine learning applied to technology deepfake it’s an amazing advance in visual effects and what you could do with audio. There will be wonderful things that will come out, more in the long term, in terms of environments, of building a door or a window; in terms of bringing together the big data of how things look and how light reacts to materials. Those things are going to be enormously powerful tools.”
Taking into account his way of working within the film industry, it is not ruled out that sooner or later he will end up using artificial intelligence for one of his next projects. Meanwhile, oppenheimer will be released on July 20, 2023.
