As part of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, it was announced that the ability to move your WhatsApp chat history will first come to Samsung’s new products. So, if you have an iPhone, but you want to try the new foldable Samsung Galaxy, you should not worry about your WhatsApp conversations, because you can transfer them to the new device, through Smart Switch, even if it is an Android operating system.
“If you’re upgrading to a foldable phone, Smart Switch makes it easy to maintain your apps and the memories you’re used to. And now, that includes your messages. For the first time on any Android smartphone, you can now safely transfer everything your WhatsApp experience, including your ongoing conversations and photos, from your old iPhone to your new Galaxy phone, “said Samsung during the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday.
In the coming weeks, users around the world will be able to start using this feature to move their WhatsApp chats to a Samsung device running Android 10.
Encryption and storage on Samsung devices
Unlike other brands that use cloud-based messaging, WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted by default and stored on the device.
This means that carrying WhatsApp history between platforms requires additional work from WhatsApp, operating systems and device manufacturers to build it in a safe and reliable way.
“This has been one of the most requested features by users for years and we are working together with the manufacturers of operating systems and devices to solve it,” announced Sandeep Paruchuri, WhatsApp Product Manager.
The feature will be available to users of both Android and iOS systems, which means that people will be able to switch from both Android to iOS and iOS to Android.
