On January 1st, the new regulations that allow supermarkets and businesses that work in bulk allow customers to use reusable containers suitable for the nature of the product purchased.
This is stated in article 9 of the Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Waste, which is the first step to eradicate or minimize the use of single-use plastics, even in the form of polystyrene or plasticized paper so common in supermarkets, hypermarkets or stores. of convenience.
Although it is true that Carrefour was ahead of the current legislation in 2019the truth is that there are certain gaps that should be checked to find out what type of containers we can use to make the purchase and thus be a little more sustainable.

One of the fears of the Spanish distribution was that, as is logical, there are certain pathogens that may be present in these reusable containers that we bring from home, in addition to greater fragility or wear that does not usually happen with single-use plastic.
This means that establishments also have the power to reject our containers if they are obviously dirty or are not suitable. Although the classification of “adequate” is ambiguous, since it is not specified, we can understand that it is about containers that are in good condition and clean.
Although we do not intend it, it is evident that the single-use plastic or paper is safer than round trip containers, especially if what we intend to save are meat and fish. Among these evidences, it is also convenient to understand that not all containers or lunch boxes are equally usable.
In this sense, the recommendations suggest that let’s check that they are for food use, where we must look at a pictogram that the containers contain and if we see a cup and a cutlery in it, it means that it can be used to store food. In these drawings we can also see if the material is suitable for microwaves or dishwashers.
Regarding the materials, there are diversity of opinions, since those that are most manageable are also the least durable and less hygienic, as is the case with plastic containers, which are more porous and suffer greater wear than glass. In contrast, glass is heavier and more fragile, but more aseptic and more durable. We could also mention steel, but in this case we have to talk about a higher cost and also a greater weight.
Among the evidences that we must be clear about is that We must not reuse containers that are poorly washed (nothing to take advantage of the lunch box at work and then go shopping with it, as it can be loaded with pathogens) and that, in case of having well-disinfected containers, the last thing we buy are the most perishable products so that they do not damaged during our purchase.

As is logical, once at home or after having used our containers, it is better wash them thoroughly with some disinfectant detergent or through the dishwasher than simply scouring and reusing.
