During its 2019 annual event, Microsoft finally showed us the long-awaited Surface Duo, a mobile with two screens and Android operating system. The details about its availability and price in the United States already made us suppose that in Spain it would have a high cost. And so it was: it went on sale for 1,549 euros last June.
Now, Microsoft is preparing the second generation of this device and everything seems to indicate that the Surface Duo 2 will be officially presented this fall. Last month, some images were leaked that told us about its design and its triple rear camera; Now, its time at Geekbench has confirmed its first technical characteristics.
Jump in processor and RAM
The first leaked images of Microsoft’s future dual-screen mobile showed us that it will include a new triple camera system in a rectangular module. Also, it appears that Microsoft will move its fingerprint reader to the Duo 2’s power button and center the USB-C port on the right edge.
These external changes are now joined by some details about the inner evolution of the Surface Duo 2. The Geekbench list published by SlashLeaks reveals three important data of its technical sheet: it will include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 8 GB of RAM and the Android 11 operating system.
That means it will be compatible with 5G network both millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz, and will come with native WiFi 6E capable of moving data at 3.6 Gbps. If we consider that the current Surface Duo mounts the Snapdragon 855 along with 6 GB of RAM and came with Android 10 out of the box, it seems the natural evolution.
Other rumors point to an NFC chip for contactless payments and the possibility that Microsoft slightly increases the size of each screen in this second generation. What seems certain is that those panels will be joined again by two 360-degree hinges. To confirm all these characteristics and know the rest of the benefits, we will have to wait for the official presentation of the Surface Duo 2, which will probably be in October.
