Video game adaptations have been, for the most part, a resounding failure. However, at HBO Max they are doing everything possible so that the series of The Last of Us completely distance yourself from failed projects. Now, although showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are respecting the original story proposed by Naughty Dog, they also intend delve into it to a level not seen in the game.
A few months ago, Neil Druckmann had already warned that, as it was an adaptation, they necessarily had to make some minor changes. The reason? A series is aimed at a much broader audience than a video game. Therefore, they must be prepared to cause interest to different types of public.
However, Craig Mazin, in a behind the scenes shared by the production, revealed something that we did not know and that is quite interesting. series of The Last of Us will not only adapt the events already seen in the video game, but it will also delve into moments that, for one reason or another, were not included in the playable experience.
The thing is, those moments that surely didn’t have much significance in the game, in the series they can contribute to reinforcing the narrative. “When you’re porting something like a video game, the changes need to be done intelligently. We are counting more. there’s more in betweenMazzin commented.
series of The Last of Us will delve even deeper into the history of the games
For now, yes, they did not specify what type of events they are going to develop. For our part, we can intuit that the secondary characters, those who in the first installment of The Last of Us they had a brief presence, but also a key one, they will have a more detailed development. After all, there are more things that surely happened as Joel and Ellie embarked on their perilous adventure through Boston.
Be careful, the above does not mean that the protagonists will not have new stories to tell. In fact, at the end of 2022, Neil Druckmann announced that, in the series, Joel will have a hearing problem caused by a gunshot. This physical deficiency was not addressed in the game, and can really play a role in dangerous situations.
Although these changes and narrative proposals may seem very significant to some fans, the truth is that they are welcome. As long as, of course, they are developed properly. The showrunners of The Last of Us promised that their production will not repeat the mistakes of Game of Thrones. That is, trying to explore stories or characters that had not even been imagined by George RR Martin.
Sign up for HBO Max and you will have access to the best series and exclusive movies What The Wire, the sopranos either Game of Thrones. Includes the entire Warner catalogue, Cartoon Network classics and major releases.
“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games.. We will not find ourselves with the same problem as Game of Thrones, since The Last of Us Part II [el segundo juego] doesn’t end in a cliffhanger,” Neil Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter.
Basically, then, the story is already well defined by the games, so no need for improvisation. Remember that the creators of Game of Thronesfor the last few seasons, they were forced to create their own storyline because George RR Martin didn’t finish winter winds on time. Fortunately, with The Last of Us will not be the case.
