How did Mother’s Day come about in Mexico?
The celebration of Mother’s Day commemorated in our country since 1922 At the initiative of the then Secretary of Public Education, the journalist Rafael Alducín, founder of Excelsior, a newspaper in which a call was published so that “the tenth of May of every year be consecrated by the children to exalt in life or in memory who gave them being”.
This call was well received by the then President of the Republic, Álvaro Obregón, becoming a commemorative date that over the years managed to take root among Mexicans.
Mother’s Day around the world
Of course, this celebration is not exclusive to Mexico, it is a celebration present in almost the entire world. It is believed that the first such commemoration took place in ancient Greece and was a tribute to Rhea, mother of the gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.
One of the origins of the date is linked to the United States, in this version it is said to have been established by Anna Jarvis in 1908, in honor of her mother, Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers in both sides of the Civil War and created the Mother’s Day Labor Club to address public health issues.
According to the UN, Mother’s Day is currently celebrated in more than 80 countries around the world.
Mother’s Day 2023 in Mexico
This May 10 will fall on a Wednesday in Mexico. Since it is not an official rest day, workplaces can determine whether or not their employees can take it as a day off. But they are not bound by the Federal Labor Law.
