Does my money still have value?
The first step is to identify if your money still has value and therefore should be accepted in any business. The oldest banknotes and coins accepted are those belonging to Banxico’s B and C families, which include the ‘new pesos’, which are in the process of being withdrawn but retain their value.
What happens is that the banknotes and coins in the withdrawal process can continue to be used to carry out commercial and exchange transactions, but when they reach the banks, they must separate them to deposit them in Banxico and not return them to the public.
Which banknotes and coins no longer have value?
The demonetized banknotes and coins are part of the A and AA families. The banknotes of these families lost value on January 1, 1996, while the coins lost value on November 15, 1995. If you want to know which banknotes and coins belong to these families, you can check at https://www.banxico.org.mx/billetes-y-monedas/desmonetizados-no-validos-tra.html .
Outside of the demonetized families, all remaining bills and coins have value. In case of presenting any damage, Banxico also has considerations of when they maintain their value.
The authenticity of a damaged bill is not associated with any particular security element, and is determined by reviewing it completely.
