Who can manufacture the banknotes in Mexico?
The manufacture of banknotes in the country is in charge of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), which has two factories in the national territory.
However, it has not always been so. At the beginning of Banxico (1925) the banknotes it put into circulation were manufactured by the American Bank Note Company of New York.
It was not until 1969 that Mexican banknotes began to be printed in Mexico at the Banxico banknote factory.

What happens if I receive a counterfeit bill?
Although Banxico integrates different security elements to the bills and coins in circulation, it may be the case that there are counterfeit bills made by criminals.
In this case, if you receive one or suspect its authenticity, you should not use it for payments, otherwise you would commit a crime.
Making payments with a counterfeit piece is a federal crime punishable by up to twelve years in prison; Instead, you must take the banknote or coin that appears to be false to any bank branch so that they can send it to Banco de México for analysis for free.
The Bank of Mexico is the only institution in the country that determines if a banknote or coin is authentic or false.
