first spell
Calypso made her first page appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #209 as Kraven the Hunter’s mistress.
Thrilled with the hunt and disappointed that Kraven had stopped chasing the wall-crawler, Calypso manipulated and pressured the Hunter into being “the greatest” again, since he wasn’t getting any younger and was simply letting his talents go to waste. .
It’s dark magic, baby
He spent his time on a small Caribbean island envying the tribal chiefs who wielded ancestral power. Calypso turned to the practice of arcane magic to satisfy his deep thirst for power and control. Drawn to darkness and evil, she welcomed sacred ceremonies that required blood sacrifice, easily making the necessary kills to own her own.
After Kraven’s death, she needed a place to focus her lust and direction, even coming to terms with her hatred for Spider-Man. Obsessed with not only being a witch, but the witch herself, she did not hesitate to sacrifice her younger sister, ensuring her second death and her first soul. This was just the beginning; the number of souls she has taken is staggering.
Insatiable desire to torture and play
With her heightened powers, Calypso mastered mind control, rituals, poisons and spells, and resurrection. She also has the ability to blunt Spidey’s spider-sense, control animals, and harness the evil spirits that serve her.
By taking over his sister’s possessions, he found himself able to control his servant, the Nameless One, a strong zombie. His power would soon acquire the ability to turn others into zombies and possess their bodies. He has saved himself from death by resurrecting himself.
Invoking the rage
During a five-part story arc titled ‘torment’ (Spider-Man (1990) #1–#5), his hatred for Spider-Man reached a boiling point when he blamed the web-slinger for the hunter’s death in The Last. Kraven hunt.
Armed with her potions and charms, Calypso took over the Lizard’s will and possessed her mind, aiding her in her takedown of Spidey. With Calypso’s spiritual drums pounding in her mind, she drove them both into a wild and ferocious frenzy.
With all three on the brink of death, after a building exploded, Calypso lived to see another day by faking her death by summoning some magic and causing another building to collapse on her.
Controlling the Devil (from Hell’s Kitchen)
Interested in resurrecting Kraven, Calypso encountered the Nameless One in Hell’s Kitchen.
Believing she found her former lover’s old enemy, Daredevil, she pursued the red demon in hopes of triumphing over him. Impaling the beast on its own severed horn, Calypso was disappointed to discover that it was not Daredevil, but rather his doppelgänger, Hellspawn.
The real Daredevil was able to defeat the Nameless One, but the Witch was able to defeat the Man Without Fear, transforming him into her new servant of the Nameless One, who was mystically linked to her. Together, they captured Haitian refugees within the city while she transformed them into more zombies.
