Religion
The vast majority of Tajikistan’s inhabitants are Muslims, mostly Sunnis.
Government
In 1994, voters approved a new constitution to replace the Soviet-era constitution, which had been in place since 1978 and was amended after independence.
The new constitution established the legislative, executive and judicial powers.
Executive power is vested in the president, who acts as the head of state. The president is directly elected to a maximum of two seven-year terms and appoints the cabinet and high court judges, subject to the approval of the legislature.
The prime minister, also appointed by the president and confirmed by the legislature, serves as the head of government.
