Running into a McAuto is one of the things more normal today both in our cities and in other remote parts of the planet.
This seems like a format born at the same time as the mythical hamburger chain, but no, this was not the story of the birth of one of the most practical when you are very hungry and have little desire to get out of the car.
The world’s first McDonald’s for cars was created in Sierra VistaArizona, forever changing the ability to receive quarter-pounder burgers through the car window.
This happened in 1975on a specific date: January 24, when the first restaurant in the chain opened drive-through of the franchise, which to date had not served any franchise burger in this way.
All for discretion
An interesting detail of the story is that Sierra Vista is a military cityand many of its inhabitants work at the nearby Fort Huachuca (a US Army base).
This nature of the city meant that the soldiers who were on duty could not be seen eating in their uniforms due to the strong restrictions of military regulations.
This meant that they could move on to pick up discreetly their lunches and take their food where they would not be seen. To do this, according to Atlas Obscura, franchise owner Dave Rich made a hole in the wall in his own franchise and not only this, but he also placed a glass and an intercom, so that he was unknowingly making history.
However, the original building where all this happened is no longer standing and, instead, the new building where McDonald’s is located has a sign where you can read: “First McDonald’s Drive Trhu of the world”, which is accompanied by a small exhibition of souvenirs from the anniversary inside.
