Parallel to the ‘summer return operation’ planned by the DGT from August 31 to September 3, and linked to ‘back to school’, the large food distribution companies are preparing for what is known as the ‘pantry operation’. Hundreds of logistics platforms, supermarkets and hypermarkets have to adapt to the big changes in consumption that occur abruptly in society, all as a consequence of the end of the summer holidays.
As explained by ASEDAS, the Spanish Association of Distributors, Supermarkets and Supermarkets, these days are a key moment in the food distribution calendar, only comparable to Christmas dates. Are million people who leave their holiday destinations to return to their places of residence, resuming routines and causing a great demand for basic and fresh food in the big cities.
In this way, companies must adapt to three simultaneous phenomena:
He demand shift of products from tourist areas, usually smaller and local businesses, to large chains in urban centers.
The increase in the volume of food purchases and basic products to replenish the pantry, fridge and freezer.
The end of the season in high in Hotels and restaurants coastal and other tourist spots.
We consumers return to our usual routine and in addition to unpacking and getting the home ready for autumn, it’s time to take an inventory of the kitchen, since we usually find the fridge practically empty and the pantry in similar conditions.
According to ASEDAS, on these dates we bought almost a 50% more legumes that the rest of the year, we replace basic fresh meats of chicken, beef, pork and processed -sausages, meatballs…- and we prefer to stock up on frozen fish. In addition, there is a notable increase in the purchase of vegetables and basic vegetables, such as onions, potatoes, zucchini and peppers, and other basic ones such as flour, sugar, pasta or eggs.
If in each home it is the consumers who have to organize and plan the purchase and family pantry, the ‘pantry operation’ also affects the companies themselves where we go en masse to fill carts and baskets, a phenomenon that we are not aware of but that depends on the stability of consumption food across the country.
