Causes of multiple sclerosis
According to the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INNN), multiple sclerosis is a chronic, demyelinating disease of the Central Nervous System. It is a neurological disease in which its cause is unknown.
Some studies indicate that certain genetic factors in people can make them more susceptible to the disease, however, there is no evidence that it is directly inherited.
What deterioration causes the disease?
The health agency explains that it attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve that transmits sensations to the brain and spinal cord. Plaques of hardened scar tissue (sclerosis) appear at places where myelin is destroyed, at different sites in the central nervous system. Nerve impulses passing through these sites are interrupted and sometimes totally blocked.
It is known as multiple sclerosis because several areas of the brain and spinal cord are affected, and sclerosis because hardened patches of scar tissue form in place of the myelin that has been destroyed.
