Vargas refers that the video CVs that he has seen for an average of four minutes and were carried out by professionals between 24 and 36 years old to occupy a position in the manufacturing, hospitality, human resources, communication and digital marketing sectors. “You don’t see it in health sciences or careers like architecture and photography, where candidates prefer to send proof of their work through a book”, he details.
Ramiro Luz, LinkedIn Talent and Solutions Leader for Latin America, considers that today the jobs that are being created are not the same as before, precisely because of the change in the market. In that sense, he observes that employers are leaving their previously functional and established parameters to recruit talent.
“Historically they had very well defined what profile to hire, graduates from what schools, with what credentials and degrees. Now they are making different decisions and hiring based on the skills of the candidate. And although the technical skills are important, the soft ones are the ones that predominate, ”she points out.
While some recruiters like to be able to hear and see a candidate, for others a video CV reopens the debate about the weight that the applicant’s image should have in a selection process.
64% of the professionals surveyed by OCCMundial assured that there is discrimination in the company where they work. Age, physical appearance and personal image were the three main factors of discrimination pointed out by the professionals surveyed by the job bank, while the lack of hiring was the main effect of discrimination reported by 60% of the participants.
Faced with the risk that the image of an applicant biases a talent selection process, some companies, like Walmart, They began to adopt blind CVs, which do not include the applicant’s photo, age, gender, sexual preference or religion.
Although, in the country, the video curriculum is a tool little used by applicants, Vargas predicts its boom in the areas of human resources, as happened with artificial intelligence. “I don’t think we’re exempt from these digital trends that are coming and growing in the job market,” he says.
One of the benefits that specialists highlight of the video format is the time saving. In one week, the job boards for which Vargas works receive an average of between 700 and 800 resumes, of which at least 10% are identical. A video CV tests the ability of the applicant to sell himself in a few minutes, saves the recruiter time and can have an assertive evaluation faster. Other benefits that recruiters see in the video resume are:
Attraction of foreign talent.
The rise of home office and the flexible work models opened the possibility for more foreign professionals to apply for a vacancy anywhere in the world, only with a 100% virtual recruitment and onboarding process. According to the Indeed job market, from January 2021 to January 2022, the international job search grew 35% in Mexico alone.
Biggest filter.
The difficulty in finding the right candidate is increasing. Manpower Group data reveals that 76% of companies in Mexico have difficulty finding the talent they need. In a video resume, recruiters can perceive if the applicant has communication, synthesis, resilience and digital domain skills.
Go in line with the digital trend.
The video CV does not replace the job interview because this is the one that, due to its richness and complexity, allows us to understand whether or not a candidate is suitable for a certain position. However, it is an interesting filter that is in line with work 5.0, that is, with digitizing the various tools with which an applicant approaches a job.
The form and the background
For Miranda Guzman, senior advisor of the recruitment company Michael Page, video CVs are still far from becoming the standard in Mexico. “It depends a lot on the sector you are in, the profiles that have a greater affinity with digital marketing could have a greater interaction with the technological and innovation uses for job applications,” he points out.
Today, video resumes are still a novelty, and while they may gradually become more common, they are likely to act as an addition to the traditional resume, not a replacement. In any case, the specialists give some recommendations on how to create a video CV.
