Those who are of an age remember, surely, the Pryca supermarkets with their green logo and their food offers that in the seventies and eighties they made me go crazy to its clientele as a new form of family consumption.
As also happens with the pesetasthe new generations no longer understand what it is about and little do they imagine that the great Carrefours of today used to wear parrot green and, what’s more, in the beginning, they had an orange logo.
In fact, the Pryca hypermarket chain, founded in 1976, was managed by the Carrefour group. Your name was an acronym of the then attractive and little exploited words of price and quality.
Although its official foundation was in 1976, this brand began to be used in Spain in 1964 under the management of the company Supermercados Pryca, with four supermarkets in Madrid and Barcelona.
However, this first and discreet company declared itself in suspension of payments and it was liquidated in 1968, going completely unnoticed by the Spanish population of that time.
the full momentum
A few years later, a French group that included Carrefour, Hypermarket Promoterand the Simago warehouse company (of the March group) promoted the Pryca brand.
Specifically, it was in 1973 when this group of companies opened in the Barcelona town of The Prat of Llobregat a shopping center that was followed by expansion throughout Spain, now under the ubiquitous Pryca brand.
a new model
Although today it seems impossible, this model of shopping centers on the outskirts of large cities was a new model coined by Pryca. Then the iconic structure of a department store next to a huge car park, perfect for doing the shopping with the family, without queues.
Also then Pryca created his own White brand for food and textile products, baptized as Tex, which is still marketed today and with great success. A success story followed these hypermarkets, 86% controlled by Grupo Carrefour.
In the 1990s, Pryca had more than a hundred of stores throughout Spain and there was nothing to suggest that ten years later everything would change, at least in appearance.
In 1999 the Carrefour group merged with the French group that owns Continente and all the supermarkets of the new resulting group were renamed Carrefour, except for some Pryca that had to be sold to avoid a high concentration of supermarkets by the group.

This is how, apparently, Pryca disappeared from the public sphere of Spanish society, although in reality he is still more present than ever, judging by the great presence of the carrefour group in Spain.
