Samsung would launch into a new adventure with the Galaxy Ring, a smart ring which this week stars in reports from South Korea. According to the publication The Electhe manufacturer is working on this product, unprecedented in its catalogue, which would offer the typical functions of wearables.
Reports indicate that Samsung partnered in this project with the Japanese company Meiko, which would be in charge of developing the plates for the rings. This technology —its technical name is “PCB”— allows the connection of different components and the general operation of the device, in addition to collecting information.
As we pointed out, the galaxy ring it would offer features traditionally found in wearable devices, such as smartwatches and wristbands. Thanks to the inclusion of sensors, the Samsung ring would be used to monitor health variables. Like other devices in this category, it would be linked to phones through a specific application.
When will you be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy Ring?
The report by the South Korean media indicates that the company has already started the development of the Galaxy Ring. However, there are no details regarding the eventual mass productionwith its sights set on a commercial launch.
Samsung may be in the early stages of development, designing prototypes with business partners. In later instances, he would review the potential of the product, to finally make a footing in the market. In that case, the ring would be added to wearable devices from the brand, which already offers smartwatches with its Galaxy Watch series.
Previously, it had been speculated with the possibility of the Samsung ring being presented to the public at CES 2024, the technology fair in Las Vegas, United States. What else is known about Samsung’s ring?
- The “Galaxy Ring” Project isn’t exactly a mystery. Last year the possible characteristics of the product were disclosed, in patents submitted to the South Korean authorities.
- According Android Authority, the documents suggest that the ring will allow monitoring of the user’s temperature and heart rate. Options for sleep monitoring are also expected.
- Previous patents showed a possible integration of the product with other home automation devices. For example, allowing you to control TV functions with the ring.
- What would be the sale price of the Samsung Galaxy Ring? It is not yet possible to hit the key regarding this data. However, it will not be a cheap item. As a parameter, the smart rings that are currently offered on the market, from other brands, are sold from $300.
- Some industry products require a monthly subscription to access the data it collects. In the preview, it is estimated that Samsung would not turn to that modality.
Smart rings are a commitment to “discreet” monitoring
The Samsung Galaxy Ring would provide a more subtle alternative —at least in aesthetic terms— to users interested in the functions of the wearables. It goes without saying: a ring is substantially smaller than a watch, a bracelet or smart glasses. Plus, they offer a screen-free experience.
If the rumors are true, and the South Korean manufacturer launches this product, it won’t be the first to market smart rings. One of the emblems in that specific category is Oura, a Finnish startup. Their devices are worn on the finger and measure variables such as physical activity, the user’s heart rate and sleep quality, among others.
In 2021, Apple was rumored to be working on its own smart ring. However, that product has not yet materialized and has only been seen in patents. It would be interesting the appearance of a device of this kind that, perhaps, could complement and expand the options of the brand new Vision Pro glasses from the brand with the bitten apple.
