There are 52.8 million Mexicans who, on average, said they spend 41 hours 33 minutes a week dedicating their time to work activities.
Of course there are some more workaholics than others, such as those in Mexico City, who claimed to be busy at work for 45 hours 37 minutes, and there are also those who are more “hearty”, such as those from Chiapas (29 hours 20 minutes). Mexico is one of the countries where more time is occupied for work.
The Federal Labor Law says that the limit of hours that a person can work is 48 hours per week, establishing a maximum of eight hours per day and six days per week. However, there are more than 10 million employees who exceed that time.
There are initiatives in the Senate that seek to reduce the time of the working day, although so far they have not advanced.
And we only live to work?
The reality is that the working day consumes a lot of people’s time; however, there is space for other activities, although many of them are not related to recreation.
Second is studying and doing study-related activities. In this section there are almost 17.3 million Mexicans who dedicate, on average, 29 hours and 12 minutes a week.
Nearly a fifth of the week is spent burning tabs with books, school, homework, and school-related disciplines.
The third most mentioned activity in the Inegi survey is caring, caring without payment and exclusively for children, the elderly and the disabled, for which almost 23.6 million Mexicans spent 23 hours and 11 minutes a week.
It is up to fourth place that Mexicans said they have time to do the activities they like (hobbies). 85.9 million inhabitants of the country affirmed that they dedicated 19 hours and 26 minutes to their favorite hobby, a little less than 3 hours a day.
But of course, in order to have free time, many times it was conditioned to first doing household chores, another activity that also eats up an important part of our space, according to the Inegi.
For this part, 16 hours and 25 minutes a week were allocated. In a smaller dimension, doing community or volunteer work; carrying water or firewood, and repairing or maintaining their home, furniture, household appliances or vehicles took 7 hours 48 minutes, 6 hours 40 minutes and 6 hours 35 minutes in the week, respectively.
The Inegi data thus shows that Mexicans are workers, and productivity is another issue.
