Woman discovers that her date has cheated on more than four women on the web.
Find the scammer’s location and force him to reveal his true identity.
Stories shock Yucatecans with psychological and financial damage.
They warn that the account of the “Mexican Tinder Scammer” is still active.
Although dating apps help singles to connect socially and romantically, meeting people from all over the world and widening their circles of interest, many use this digital refuge to take advantage of the emotional vulnerability of users, as Netflix has revealed in the “Tinder Scammer”.
This documentary is one of the most viewed on the streaming platform in Mexico, as it tells the story of simon leiev and his method of tricking women on Tinder into stealing large sums of money from them by building their trust and “love bombing” them.
However, infatuation fraud in this type of mobile application is not new and, after the media impact generated by the Netflix film, many other cases have arisen in social networks, such is the case of the “Mexican Tinder Scammer”.
Well after seeing #thetinderswindler, and since almost two years have passed, I think I can now talk about how I was catfished (scammed) by a certain Guillermo Ortega (note, if I say his name it is because I want to avoid more victims than there are already). I open thread:

The “Mexican Tinder Scammer”
everything happens in Merida Yucatantwo years ago, where a Tinder user named William Ortega tried to swindle a young woman named Sofía Abraham.
The story is told by the same victim, who was inspired by the Netflix film to prevent more women from falling for the alleged man’s lies.
According to the thread, Guillermo posed as a doctor in his dating profile and had poor quality photos of someone who, later they would verify, had stolen his identity.
Sofía Abraham made a match with him in 2018 and, after weeks of talking very frequently through WhastApp, the woman avoided dozens of “red flags”, such as not sending her photographs, appearing depressed and suicidal, that his number always appeared as “unknown” or that, when talking on the phone, his voice always sounded distorted with the excuse that the microphone of his cell phone did not work because “it had gotten wet”.
“I wanted us to meet in person to find out that it existed, because something did not add up 100. He told me that since he lives with his mother, he was afraid of Covid, and at that point in the pandemic I was the same and I understood, ”says the young woman.
Despite her intuition, Sofía believed the “love bombardment” that the alleged man applied to her with 24/7 conversations, “I love you”, “I like you” and many acts of jealousy.
The first breaking point, he says, was when he received a call at night where -applying emotional blackmail- Guillermo Ortega told him that he wanted to commit suicide with pills.
“After begging him not to and begging him to send me his location so I could go ‘save’ him, he never sent it to me and clearly nothing was taken. Those same “blackmail” patterns were repeated a lot”, he continues.
However, when the alleged man was already planning a “great trip” as a couple with Sofía, whom he promised to take to the beach for a weekend, the young woman began to doubt the veracity of his existence, which saved her from putting your life and financial integrity in the hands of the scammer; but nevertheless, he did not leave him and did everything possible to unmask him.
“Twice I tried to fuck it up and block it, but not even knowing if it was real wouldn’t let me live; I had to ‘break my heart’ to let it go (I know, a lot of drama). I decided to play along. I knew that he was not going to be at peace until he knew what was going on, ”he narrates.
Already as “boyfriends” at a distance, Sofía insisted many times on seeing Guillermo in person and, not succeeding, decided to investigate his life on her own. She had five key clues: she knew the neighborhood and the specific area, that the house was one story, she didn’t have a car, they had two dogs, and even the name of her mother. So, After several laps with a friend, she found the location of her Tinder lover.
“He talks to me on the phone and confesses that he is not the one in the photos, he is not a doctor and that was not his voice (…) My surprise was when I heard a ‘hello’ and it was a woman’s voice, totally feminine. She was another person, ”Sofia highlights in her Twitter thread.
The story takes a resounding turn. According to the young woman, the alleged man named Guillermo Ortega is actually a woman named Marianawho uses someone else’s identity on the dating social network to “fall in love” with other women and swindle them financially.
However, since Sofía Abraham realized it in time, she was not a financial victim, although she was a watershed for other women, whom she did steal, to raise their voices.
“Suddenly I see someone approaching: a woman, dark skin, thick complexion (the irony), short stature and sportswear. I didn’t know whether to get out of the car; I was scared, but a thousand questions to ask”.
“In the end I told him that in his life he would look for me, that I was rubbish, that he would never do it again and between tears he promised me that he would not do it. Days later, I get photos of a letter he wrote by hand asking for forgiveness. I blocked her and never heard from her again. Of course, it doesn’t end here.”
Multiple victims and one account still active
While Sofía gathered information about the alleged Guillermo Ortega, even as “virtual boyfriends”, she managed to contact another woman on Instagram, called “Laura”, who had experienced a similar story with her Tinder match. She also the suicide call, the “love bombing” and the fake calls… and she wasn’t the only one.
“She talked to him for a short time, and because they were focused on their studies they stopped talking. I contacted two other girls and it was the same story. While this was happening, I kept telling him what he wanted to hear to gain more time,” says the young woman.
A year later, in June 2021, another young woman whom Sofía calls “Verónica” approached her to ask about Guillermo Ortega, telling her story, similar, but maxed out.
“He was talking to her for six months, he spent time comparing her to me without her knowing me, he told her that he would never be like his ex and that he was not her type, but he was content. Scary things. He even managed to lower money. They planned a trip to Cancun, she paid for everything and she ended up going alone“.
“He ‘prescribed’ things to his mother believing himself to be a doctor and almost killed her. In the end, Veronica did NOT realize it, and Guillermo/Mariana told her who she really was,” the Twitter girl continues.
Talking, the two victims fell into shock when they shared their story and how a transgender woman or man had abused their trust, leaving them marked forever and insecure about the use of virtual platforms, they even call on women to alert them to the risks that meeting people online represent.
“For a long time I wanted to publish it, let people know, go to his house and tell his mom everything so that they give him the help he clearly needsbut I felt like it was putting more focus on that and it was something I wanted to leave far behind.”
“But the net, see #thetinderswindler and know that it’s something he continues to do, (because he follows his profile on Tinder) to pick more people up for their troubles, it made me want to talk. All psychological damage is unacceptable. She is sick and she needs help ”, finishes Sofía.
Social network users have begun to share the story of Sofía Abraham, commenting with surprise and indignation on the “terrifying” situation in which the trans woman put other young women on the dating application, but there were also those who tagged their friends to spread the history, resulting in Within the Twitter thread, one more woman identified herself as another victim of Mariana, alias William Ortega.
This thread was sent to me because it did the same thing to me. It wasn’t because I have time and it didn’t get that far, but it’s good that you decided to tell it.
