In September 2021, vehicle production in Spain reached 178,055 units. A volume that, compared to that obtained in the same period of the previous year, represents a drop of 32.2%. The strong shortage of microchips is being decisive.
The Spanish automotive industry blames the serious effects caused by the shortage of microchips. Factories must cut back on activity and this, logically, translates into the number of vehicles leaving the assembly lines. On September 2021
the vehicle production in Spain
reached the 178,055 units, which is a 32.2% drop with respect to the same period of the previous year.
The shortage of microchips not only affects the Spanish territory. Europe in general terms is facing this crisis. The forecasts indicate that this situation will not be resolved until the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. On the contrary, and despite the setbacks experienced in recent months, the accumulated data continue to be positive. Between the months of January and September, vehicle production accumulated 1,592,295 units, 3.6% more
compared to 2020.
The production of electrified vehicles maintains its upward trend
Although in general terms fewer vehicles were manufactured in Spanish territory, if we put the focus on the electrified vehicles, continues its upward trend and confirms the commitment of the production centers in Spain to electrification. Between January and September, the production of electrified vehicles represented 9.2% of the total with 145,726 units. In just nine months, the total production of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids exceeded the total of 2020. The group of alternative vehicles accounted for 11.4% of production.
Regarding the production by vehicle typeDuring the month of September, compared to the previous year, the manufacture of passenger cars and SUVs suffered a decline of 31.4% with only 141,930 units. This situation in the Spanish production centers directly affects the car sales figures in Europe. New car registrations continue to decline in the main European markets.
