The National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC, for its acronym in English) has launched a new alert about the danger of storm surge, flooding and gale damage after the arrival of hurricane ‘Ida’, which was gathering strength in the last hours , to the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
‘Ida’, now a Category 4 hurricane, is located less than 120 km south of the mouth of the Mississippi River and about 235 km southeast of Houma, Louisiana, and is moving northwest at about 24 km / h with Maximum sustained winds of 220 km / h and stronger gusts.
The NHC forecasts that the hurricane will continue to gather strength over the next 12 hours, making landfall on the southeast coast of Louisiana this Sunday afternoon as an “extremely dangerous” hurricane, after which it will move inland into some areas of Louisiana and western Mississippi throughout Monday.
According to forecasts, ‘Ida’ will bring a dangerous storm surge that, combined with high tide, could cause flooding of areas near the coast, reports the ‘Nola Times Picayune’.
Hurricane Ida warnings are in effect for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. New Orleans is under a hurricane warning.
