Heart patients in North Wales are taking part in a trial of a new app that monitors them through a mobile phone. Betsi Cadwaladr’s board of health is working with technology firm Huma to test whether the new software can help people with heart problems in their own homes.
The application allows patients to make video consultations, avoiding unnecessary visits to the hospital. The pilot test funded by the Welsh government could mean that patients’ health problems are detected more quickly.
As part of the test, patients will receive equipment to take readings, including a blood pressure cuff, scales and a pulse oximeter. Cardiology specialists will be able to remotely monitor each patient’s symptoms and progress, and conduct video consultations to address any concerns. If necessary, hospital visits can be scheduled for further consultation and treatment.
