Twitter’s 280 characters are already history. At least, for Twitter Blue users. The social network has announced the possibility of share posts with a maximum of 10,000 characters —which would be equivalent to approximately 2,000 words—, also adding the possibility of including text in bold and italics. Also, of course, images or any other type of multimedia content, such as GIFs or videos.
The truth is that, for a long time, Twitter allowed Blue users to share tweets with more than 280 characters, which is the current limit for those users who do not pay any type of subscription. Until now, however, the limit was 4,000.
Unlike Twitter Notes, which has a specific section, 10,000 character tweets will appear on the social network like any other post. Twitter, yes, will show a ‘read more’ button than those longer tweets, to prevent them from occupying the entire page in the feed.
This, of course, is not the only exclusive feature for Twitter Blue users. Those who choose to pay as little as $8 a month can also get verified, post full-length, high-quality videos, see fewer ads, and edit tweets, to name a few of the main advantages. Twitter will also include other exclusive features in the near future. Among them, the possibility that only those who have a verification and, therefore, pay for Blue, can appear in the ‘For you’ section.
The 10,000 characters on Twitter come with another novelty: subscriptions
In parallel, Twitter has revealed that the ‘Super Follow’ function will now be called simply subscriptions. Those accounts that meet a series of requirements will be able to activate the option so that their followers can pay a monthly fee in exchange for exclusive content. Creators can choose between installments of $2.99, $3.99, or $9.99 per month, depending on the type of content they publish. These, in addition, will receive 97% of the income for each subscription. Without counting, of course, the 30% commissions that Apple and Google request for each purchase.
Not any user will be able to activate a subscription in their profile. The function, we reiterate, is limited to those Twitter accounts that comply a series of requirements. Specifically, it is necessary to have a minimum of 10,000 followers and to have published at least 25 tweets in the last month. At the moment, the subscriptions are only available in the United States, but the company has confirmed that they will roll out globally in the coming months.
