The Mexican delegation participated in the last day of activities of the Olympic Games. José Luis Santana Marín, Juan Pacheco and Jesús Arturo Esparza participated in the men’s Marathon, one of the stellar competitions of the highest sports event, although they finished far from the medal positions. Despite this, they set a personal best on the 42,195-kilometer course.
José Luis Santana, originally from Mexico City, was the first of the competitors to cross the finish line, although he did so in 56th place in the competition. With an official time of 2:21:32, he was eleven minutes away from the mark set by the last runner to get on the Olympic podium.
Behind him, nine positions down and two minutes and nine seconds apart, Juan Pacheco was the 65th runner to cross the finish line at Odori Park in Sapporo. With 2:23:41 recorded on his official chronometer, he also managed to set his best record of the season.
Finally, the last Mexican to cross the finish line at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was the Aguascalientes native Jesús Arturo Esparza. He was able to cover the entire circuit in a lapse of 2:31:51 and achieved the same achievement as his two compatriots. He finished in 74th place and was placed as the third-to-last athlete to complete the course. Despite having 106 participants, only 76 met their objective.
