Republicans have criticized Biden for encouraging migrant crossings with lenient border security policies, while officials say they are trying to create a more orderly and humane system.
This is what we know about the visit of the US president to the border with Mexico.
When and where will Biden’s visit to Mexico be?
Biden will visit the border between the United States and Mexico, specifically in El Paso, Texas, a US official reported Thursday.
“The president will visit El Paso, Texas, on Sunday to discuss border control operations and meet with local officials and helping workers” in the area, he said. Biden “will ask Congress to fully fund our record resource request…and to fix our broken immigration system,” he added.
The official said that Biden, while in El Paso, will address border control operations and meet with local officials.
El Paso, a Democratic stronghold with a history of receiving immigrants, has struggled in recent months to deal with tens of thousands of migrants crossing the border from Mexico.
“Don’t come to the border”
Prior to this visit, Biden announced Thursday that his administration will use COVID-era restrictions to quickly expel Cuban, Nicaraguan and Haitian migrants who cross the US-Mexico border illegally.
