Currently, you can play Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on Xbox Game Pass. This is one of the best deals you can find on this service. If you were wondering how much it cost Microsoft to ensure the arrival of this title on its platform, one analyst has pointed out that those responsible for Xbox could well have paid up to $10 million.
According to David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, who has covered Square Enix for 15 years, Microsoft paid an estimated $5 million to $10 million to carry Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to Xbox Game Pass for an indefinite time.
Keep in mind that MSFT paid about US$5-$10m for Guardians of the Galaxy to be on Games Pass… that is like $2 per game when retail is $29. Ok that is all profit but not too many publishers will be doing that given the low economics from Game Pass.

Despite the positive reception of this game, Square Enix considered the work of Eidos Montréal as a financial failure, so this is one of the tactics that the Japanese company has used to recover the investment of this extremely expensive project. At the moment there are no official numbers from Microsoft or Square Enix about this contract, and it is very likely that this information will never be revealed.
On related topics, Marvel Unlimited has joined the Xbox Game Pass benefits. Similarly, a report indicates that indie games thrive on this service.
Editor’s Note:
More than money, I look forward to the arrival of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to Xbox Game Pass manages to benefit the sales and reception of this title. This is a great worthwhile adventure, and it’s a shame Square Enix considers it a flop.
